I'm curious and could not find the thread using channels to "enhance" a portion of a photo that has been partially obliterated.  I thought I saved it and now I can't find it.  Any one know how I do this?  Thanks ~ Sandi :)

Here are two about Blue Channel detail:

http://www.operationphotorescue.org/forum/index.php/topic,3320.0.html

I learned a lot from those threads. Just read Pat's post, which might be even better.
