My husband's family is, for a number of generations, from (and located in) the Gulf, Luisiana and Alabama, some of them flooded out by Katrina.  They were among the more fortunate, rescuing significant belongings.

Heart rending, going through the photos.

An amazing effort OPR has put together here, salvaging the underground photo history of an are through the images tucked in people's albums and shoeboxes.

Hi Ptollemy

Did you ever find the map?  It should show up on the home page.  It's awesome!

I just realized that I can see it at work on my G4 from Safari, but it doesn't appear at home on my old G3 and Explorer.  It could be your operating system or internet software.

Are you on a Mac?  There are things that PCs can see on a web site that Macs can't.  We discovered that at work when developing our own web site.  We're creating it on Macs but have to go to a PC to be able to use all the functions.  Very strange! (my husband, who's a PC weenie, gives me more grief about my beloved Mac! I have nothing against PCs, but for graphics people Macs just seem more  intuitive).

I can view it on a PC using the same version of Firefox... maybe it's a setting on your machine?

Hey Ptollemy. I'm also using Firefox 1.5.0.6, and the only way I can duplicate your problem is to turn off loading images in the options. Unless you happen to have them disabled (which I doubt, since you work on graphics), the culprit is most likely your browser cache. It's probably loading up a cached version of the page instead of loading the current one.

At the top of your browser window, click "Tools", then "Options", then "Privacy", and finally "Cache". Click the "Clear cache now" button. This should solve your problem.

The database issue is a different issue altogether.  Clustrmaps is doing some upgrades and that is why the map is not updating.  The important part is that you can see the updated map thumbnail.  I received an email from Clustrmaps indicating they are working on the issue and the map should be operational in a few days.

The folks at Clustrmaps are top notch, by the way, and if any of you are looking for a nice little map app, I highly recommend them.

Welcome, Maciek.  You're the first Scotsman I'm aware of in OPR.

You've just joined the most wonderful world-spanning group of people you can imagine! Don't hesitate to post if you need any help with your restorations. There's a wealth of knowledge in this organization and you'll find any plea for help will be met with responses from some amazingly talented and experienced volunteers!

Best wishes

Thank you.

I'm afraid I'm not real Scotsman. I live in Scotland (I love it!) but originaly I'm from Poland. So - I'm first Polish - Scotman or Scottish - Pole in OPR.
Any more Polish people in here?

Do you know - maybe - when will be new pictures available - I don't feel I can start now, I have to wait for easy ones.

Maciek,
We're getting to the last of the difficult ones from the last batch. It's my understanding as soon as these are finished the next batch will be posted.

While your waiting you can lend you eye and be a critic. Several of us keeps worklogs on here and value having other people look at our work and tell us what you think.

If you have any good techniques and feel like writing, head on over to the OPR Workshop Information Exchange and share it with the rest of the class  ;D  I for one love trying new techniques and would appreciate the tutorials.

Sit back, relax, and get to know us while you're waiting for the new batch of images. When they get here you'll have plenty of projects to choose from.

Hi Maciek,

Polish Scotsman?  Well, that's even better!

And Kenny's right on about the appreciation of suggestions and techniques.

Also if you go through the forum you'll be amazed at how much you can learn from people who are working out challenges and getting feedback from other volunteers.

Welcome to OPR from a neighbor.  I live in Gulfport, and I know there are at least two more Tampa volunteers. I guarantee you'll find this organization and its work as rewarding as it gets!

Best wishes and "luck!"

Hi guys,

This is Central Florida's time to gloat (sort of - we actually had our air conditioners on last week - that's a bit much for December!).  This week it's sunny, low 70s during the day, 40s-60s at night.  It's why we have so many visitors during the holidays.

Here's a great quote from a friend of mine in Maryland:  "Take your 70 degree weather and do not speak to me of it.  May you get sunburned and all kinds of freckles.  It's winter up here and I don't like it."

Yeah, but you don't have mega-roaches, billions of ants, termites and fleas, blistering heat and humidity in summer and hurricanes!  I suspect it balances out in the long run.

GG

Yes, but in Montana, we have no humidity, no hurricanes, no tornadoes, no cockroaches, and nothing but beautiful mountains and scenery.  It's cold in the wintertime but we have great powder to ski in.  Spring and summer bring tons of wildflowers, fall brings warm days and cool nights.

Montana....it's a privilege, not an invitation!

Hi Chris

I love the fact that you enjoy where you live so much!  It sounds like gorgeous country. I've never been northwest of New Hampshire, so I haven't had the chance to revel in the things that mean so much to you.  Just the view must be unbelievable.  Our turf is flat, flat, flat!!!

We've always talked about heading in that direction if we were ever able to get a motor home and travel the states.  I've been all over the world, and to be honest I want more than anything to see more of our beautiful country.  Oh, for a winning lotto ticket!!!

G'night.

I grew up in SW Wisconsin, moved to the Milwaukee area after college, got transferred to FL in '92 by my company, lived in FL for 14 years, and never, ever felt like I was "at home", until now.  My husband and I searched for 3 years where we wanted to live, and I never found it until we found Bozeman.  It has everything I want.  We live out in the country, where the wildlife is abundant (we had 9 mule deer in our yard this afternoon, including one "baby" a few feet from our living room window, which the cats got their thrills from).  The smallest parcels of land around us are 40 acres, and cannot be subdivided, and we have 200 acres across the road from us that is in conservation easement, which means it can never be developed.  I'm 20 minutes to town, 20 minutes to Bridger Bowl, 20 minutes to great hiking and biking.  What else is there????  Oh yeah...clean fresh air, beautiful sunrises and sunsets, low crime rates, friendly people.

I guess I should reiterate the motto of many Montanans, that Montana is a privilege, not an invitation!

Welcome to OPR, Rosie! Things are a little slow right now with the end of this round coming to a close, but soon we'll all be restoring to our heart's content.

Take this time to look around the forum and if you have any questions don't hesitate to ask! We were all noobs at one point, so we're willing to help new people get into the swing of things.

Again, Welcome!

Hamilton, Ohio just down the road a piece from Miami University ( the one in Florida came after this one). That is southwest Ohio between Cincinnati and Dayton. Originally from western Pennsylvania.

I too am a Newbie. Thanks for all your help on my first restoration. Kenny, I too have really learned from your tutorials and reading the suggestions posted by others in response to problems. I have started a Word document where I have copied some of the URLs to some of the posted tutorials. Then when I get time I investigate. Saves having to remember which post I saw a tutorial listed.

Hi!

I'm going to add to Robert's plea to hear from those of you who are outside the US.  Are you Americans living abroad, living in your country of origin or have you moved from your homeland to another country?

This is a wonderful world-spanning community, and I'd love to know more about the generous, huge-hearted people who are involved in this labor of love for our Gulf residents.  It gives me so much hope for the world when we can all come together for a worthy cause.  It reinforces my belief that good people know no borders!

Hugs to all of you.

Hi Kathy

I want to add my welcome to John's.  It's wonderful to have new volunteers.  Sounds as if your experience is about where mine was when I signed up last June.  Prepare yourself for some real challenges, but also know that you'll get plenty of help from fellow volunteers if you run into any roadblocks.  Just post, and you'll have eagle eyes (and some old ones like mine) checking out your restoration and offering observations, tips & tricks.  You've just become part of a world-wide group of incredible friends.  It doesn't get any better than OPR.  I'm glad you're one of us!

Grottzork and Tassie -- Wow we're becoming even more international.  I want to add my welcome to Christine's and Max's.

I'll tell  you that I was anxious and excited when I joined OPR as the organization was just getting underway, and the experience gets better and better.  I still begin each restoration feeling a bit inadequate, but with a lot of help from my friends on the forum, I've gotten through them.

The forum is a great way to get assistance if you run into a snag or need a tip or trick to get you through your restoration.  Many people (I'm one of them) will download posted works-in-progress to see if we can get any more information or figure out an easier way around some of the damage when you ask for help.  I hope you'll post and stay in touch with the rest of the volunteers.

Again welcome -- it's wonderful to have you with us.

We loved Ocean City and the board walk and boardwalk fries. We were also very fond of Rehobeth Beath, a little smaller in Delaware.
The water was cold! I planned to grow old in Maryland but my husband died and it was too sad to be where we loved. So I am living near my entire family here in Florida. (Not a huge family but a great one.) We all relocated here from all over the same year.

This is really interesting to find people coming together on this project from so many places. A worthy cause. Ruth

Dave and I are vacationing in Fenwick Island! We were shopping in Rehoboth this afternoon--outlet shopping is the best! And no sales tax!

We love this area too. My parents have a condo here in Fenwick--Dave and I spend at least a week each summer here since they got the place. And a few trips in the off season too.

I grew up on Long Island, so the water here seems like just the right temperature.  :)

You can't beat shopping in Delaware! Plus it is a beautiful area. Grotto's pizza place, near the main corner in Rehobeth (I think it is a chain now), meant summertime to us. Great memories.

I grew up in Miami so the ocean always seemed freezing there to me, my husband was from the UP of Michigan, he found it toasty.
Enjoy that vacation, wish I was there (and maybe 10-15 years younger). Ruth

Hi Hannie

I definitely want to add a huge OPR welcome to you.  I hope you'll be one of our regulars on the forum.  Congrats on finishing your first restoration!  The Netherlands!  I visited there when I was a kid, and I fell in love with the country.  I hope it's still as beautiful as it was then (that was several hundred years ago.  Just kidding.  But just barely. My nickname at work is "the fossil" -- but I know they mean it in the most loving way. The young PUNKS! And, of course I mean that most affectionately).

Cheers!

I can put your mind at rest Christine, the name Bozeman is the result of early Dutch immigrants not able to spell their name: Bosman.  (a very common Dutch name meaning forest man, very friendly  ;))

About 10 years ago, I spent 20 days at Huizen and visited Amsterdam several times by train.  I was impressed by the train system and the bike trails.  Amsterdam is a beautiful city.  I love the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum.

I always had the ideas that Dutch girls are short and chubby wearing a white hat with wings and Dutch boys all have a finger in the dike.  Was I wrong!  The Dutch girls are all so tall and slender.

Welcome to OPR Hannie.  The lighting of your avatar is so Dutch.

I did buy a pair of wooden shoes in Amsterdam and I was told without us falling for the tourist trap, the tradition of wooden shoe making would have been lost.  :D

Sleeping in the closet?  How did I miss that one.

A big warm welcome to Doug and Christine's Mom!  Wow, Australia, Texas, England, New York, it is fun to read where you all live.  Ray, Australia is on my list of places that I would love to see again.  I lived in Melbourne for 6 years and had a great time!
New York is another place I would love to see some time.  I heard that the folks there are as outspoken as the Dutch are so I should feel at home!

Welcome Christine's mom, MJ, Pete and Doug.

New York City is at where the 17th century Dutch settlements, New Amsterdam and New Haarlem, were.  Hannie, you will feel right at home there.

Wow, more welcomes are in order, for sure.  Chris's Mom – welcome (and I don't want to call you Chris's mom forever, so we must know your name!)  – I love that the two of you will be OPR-ing together.  And I have to add that your daughter is special beyond words (I'd guess you can take some credit for that).  I was lucky to have met her on our Biloxi run, and you're fortunate that she's your kid!

Doug, you dreamer -- no spots??  Are you kidding???  She thrives on spots – and that's just for starters!  I'm glad you're aboard.  A welcome addition to our international crew.  I look forward to your posts.

Pete, old-timer, it's good to know where you're wreaking your havoc.  From the deep south to NY, NY.  That must have been one heck of a transition!  And Ray – another wonderful Aussie.  I should have figured!

MJ, the wild woman!  I'd go toe to toe with you on exactly where the center of the universe might be, but of course that's subjective.  You're a breath of fresh air with that zany sense of humor.

As one of the oldest OPR old-timers, I have to say it's so great that word's getting around and we're blessed with so many newbies from points all over the globe.  I think we're proof that the world really can be a global community.  Let's make it so!

I've lived in the north Denver Metro area (town of Westminster) pretty much all my life. I was born in the small town of Norton KS, but when I was two I moved to Denver. The family wasn't to keen on the idea but I loaded them up and dragged them kicking and screaming all the way. I plotted my move for about a year in advance. Here (http://litterboxx.com/schoolpics/me-at-1.jpg) is a picture of the young rebel shortly after he learned that the world was much bigger than his own back yard.

The family has gotten used to it here though I should say. They aren't mad at me anymore. ;D

Mary, I probably have SOCKS older than Curtis, if he's the age he looks in his avatar.  But let's just keep that between the two of us, shall we?  I'll finally confess that the photos of the elderly woman in the Biloxi photos are really my grandmother.  I sent her in my stead so the team would be gentle on me (ha! She told me that ruse didn't work!)

I guess we'll have to try to enjoy the "I can't f**%&$!!ing see a thing" days, and the "my bones hurt like the devil; do you think we have weather coming in?" days, and the "don't make me laugh too hard; you know what happens!" days and just believe we're the age we are in our minds.  (I'm stuck at about 30 -- the best days of my life, and the year I met my beloved!)

I'll hang in there if you will!

Hugs,

Glenna

Jane, I was trying to figure out who Curtis resembles, and you just solved that for me.  I've been a fan of JD since 21 Jump Street. I'm sure Curtis will be thrilled to death to find out that two old gals think he resembles Mr. Depp.

So, if I wrote your biography along with mine, whaddaya think – is it going to rain this weekend?  My fingers are aching!

Cheers,

Glenna

P.S. Hannie, I'll let Nana know you think she looks good.  Thanks on her behalf!  (Ironically, I actually look so much like my grandmother.  In one of the cat photos I posted there's a framed photo of her, and it freaks me out that I so resemble her.  I wish she were really here to do anything, even the Biloxi run!)

OMGoodness!! I've been living a lie and didn't even know it.

Glenna, Jane and Mary, I'm so sorry.

Time to fess up I guess. Thats not me in my avatar. Its one of my chops. A gender bender where I combined Johnny Depp and Alyssa Milano. There's a tutorial I wrote for it here (http://www.photochopz.com/forum/member-photoshop-tutorials/26030-gender-bending-johnny-milano.html). It in PS7 so the keystrokes are a little odd. (Should you decide to surf that site...well, they try to keep it SFW but it's still R-rated.)

The date one the first pic is Nov. 55. The date on the licence plate in the second pic is 56. Soooo, if you have socks older than me, I recommend you let go of them. They probably aren't going to come back into style.  :)

We did discuss some entries (and considered an unofficial mentorship) but I don't recall ever doing something with a camel  :-[ , I did once turn to jellyfish into soccerballs playing a submarine game.
I moved towards photography more the past year, was proud member of the Wizards of Light -> TeamTournement2007 winning Team  - but chop on some occasional HxH, mainly in the Virgin8tors. Due to working more hours in real life (and being active at OPR) the deadlines for regular PS-contests are to tight most of the time.

Boy, I miss a day on the forum (busting butt on another batch of yellow scratches) and almost miss a chance to say hi to our newbies.

Welcome Marisa and Dave.  I hope you'll be part of our ongoing conversation on the forum - we've become one huge, wonderful (if slightly dysfunctional - kidding, guys) family!

Dave, even though I've lived in Florida for 40 years, I was born in Lancaster, New Hampshire, and consider it one of the most beautiful of our states.  Mount Washington is the most fascinating place in the world.  Some of my family lives near the base of the mountain.

I'll look forward to both of you adding to the great discussions we have, especially the really deep contemplations such as cats vs. dogs!

Hugs to you both, and I'm glad you're with us.

To all our wonderful newbies:

I'll add to Christine's disclaimer about addiction to the restorations.  My husband is threatening to put a hidden off-switch on my computer so I'll quit and come to bed at a decent hour.  At 10:30 as beloved heads for the sack: "Oh, come on, I'll clean just a few more scratches and I'll come to bed."  At 1am: "Holy smoke, my alarm goes off at 5:30. What was I thinking???? Well, just a few more scratches..."  At 5:30 am: "OMG what WAS I thinking?  I'll just lie here and listen to NPR for a few more minutes... SNORE!"  At 8:20am to my art department: "Hi guys, I'm running a little late.  I'll get there as soon as I clean the litter boxes."  And so it goes...

Welcome Dave.  Don't worry about the software knowledge. Just ask a question and you will get lots of help. Check out some of the tutorials in some of the threads. Folks find lots of great ones from time to time. It is just taking the time to delve into them when you are in the middle of restorations.

Don't worry about the comment by Candice. They do that stuff to all of us. Somehow the photo always looks worse once you get it downloaded than it did in the gallery.

I was born/raised and for some reason still live in Fargo, ND.

Yes, it's cold 6 months of the year, and the nice 6 months are usually windy. But, the people are nice, my friends and family are here and I've got a good job. (just wish all of that could be in Oregon. )  :)

I joined a few years back, and have tried to keep working on pictures here, the last few months the link kept getting farther and farther down on my favorite. lists as new websites keep getting added, but I've dragged this website back to the top again and am ready to go all out.  This is a great thing everybody is doing and I'm glad to be apart of it.

Actually we were just west of its path by about 30 miles. We had a bunch of evacuees tho.

Thanks for asking.

Hi,

I'm currently living in the "New Forest" (well it was new 900+years ago) in the UK by way of Singapore, Tokyo, New Hope Pennsylvania, Diamond Bar Ca and Arizona.

I am a newbie and happy to be here.  No one told me it was so addictive!  My husband is starting to miss his used to be regular meals.   >:D

Deborah, we should probably have somewhere on the site one of those 5,000-word disclaimers about addiction, etc, etc.  There's no getting around it, and it just gets worse and worse (or better and better, depending on whether you're the restorer or the significant other).  My hubby comes into my office every evening wanting to know if I'm coming to bed.  I always say, "Yep, I'll be right there."  Two hours later I'm still doing "just one more thing."  And heaven forbid that I don't have a restoration already lined up when I finish the one on which I'm working. Not pretty!

So for what comfort it is... you're not alone!

Welcome Deborah and welcome all the other newbies as well!
It is great to see so many new volunteers and a lot of you are posting your restore work on the forum! Great way to get some more tips.

I  could use a cook around here as well, and a cleaner would be nice so instead of the addiction disclaimer OPR could provide butlers to each volunteer! (please)

Hannie, Great idea. I could use a job. Let's see now, I could fly do your house, while I"m flying to your house, I could be doing another restore on my laptop, -- wouldn't that be kind of like curb service? Have it done by the time I get there, hand delivered... You might have something going there. Great Idea.

John, Eric and Mary (and any other newbies I've neglected - my bad - my apologies!)

If I haven't welcomed you yet  I definitely want to do so. (I go in and out of awareness of my surroundings, depending on the stress level in my life.  Being a working stiff old fart with a newly-retired husband and 10 elderly cats, that has become an issue of late)  It's always wonderful for OPR to get "new blood" to keep us from getting stale.  Our newbies have contributed much in the way of new ideas, expertise and enthusiasm.  Always a wonderful thing.

Since I'm an old-timer (one of the first members), I'm not sure how appropriate it is for me to wax too poetic about this bunch, but I think you've joined one of the most wonderful world-wide group of people you could ever find.  We help each other with our challenges, offer moral support, hard-time each other in fun when we need a break from the pixel pushing.  It's a great forum in which to hang out.  And if you read through the threads and find the thank you notes you'll realize why we're so dedicated to this job.  There are many tips & tricks, tutorials, opinions and discussion that'll help you with the restorations as well as help you become Photoshop experts in no time.

I wish for you as wonderful an experience as I've had being a proud OPRster!

Cheers,

GK

Hi John

A huge welcome to OPR from sunny Florida.  If you're into photo restoration and love doing something special for other people, you're in the right place.  In a couple of months, I'll have been an OPR-ster for 4 years, and I've loved every minute of it.

We have a wonderful, generous, sometimes nutty (who said that?) group on the forum, and there's always someone standing by if you run into a question or challenge that you're not sure how to handle.  We run into photos that are like Rorschach tests - can't tell what's in portions of the image.  We post to get feedback on what other people see - and usually someone figures it out.  We have tutorials or can find someone who can dig up tips & tricks for some of the more unusual issues, and everyone shares.  So don't hesitate to post if you run into an enigma!

I'm so glad you've joined us, laddie!

Cheers,

GK

I have never been so offended though draw some comfort by being only "one of our delusional volunteers." I presume the rest of you will be contacted shortly by the Powers that Be to advise that your forum rating is to be revised.

As for the map, it merely anticipates the next reversal of the magnetic poles for those committed to the "North is Up" view. We residents of the current southern hemisphere know which offers the best lifestyle, even if we have to use seatbelts when in bed.

Well done Tori and Pat, you both are obviously thinking while Hannie is falling about (again)

Thank you for your considered and supporting opinion Kiska. I feel I can talk to you and ignore the tastless remarks being made by others.

I suspect you have a problem with your spell checker and you were referring to the effect Fugu is having on me. The fish shop proprietor claimed to have been born and trained in Japan but with his name being Daryl Mikimoto I have my doubts. I am restricting my intake to one serving per month

The main benefit has been to allow me to see the incongruities so widely accepted in the world and to realize my role in educating the masses. I will press on and look forward to your continuing support in spreading the message.

Athol, you can depend on me to fend off the disrespectful participants here that contribute drivel from time to time. Fugu or fugue, whatever aids in your quest for enlightenment is certainly welcome by those who share your vision.

Margie,

If he is upside down, taking him down could land him on his head.  Is it your intention to try and knock some sense into him?

Just wondering...now that Athol has us all topsy-turvy do I have to eat my pineapple upside down cake while standing on my head or can I just flip the cake over  ???

Your cake should be right side up which would be upside down. You're good to go.

It's a bit ironic.  I am from Augusta, GA.  Recently, we were visiting our daughter and her family.  They live in Wichita, Kansas.  One of their friends is a photographer who posted information on OPR on her web site.  That is how I connected with OPR.

Yes, it is. I was born and raised in Wichita, but moved after I got married to El Dorado, KS about 27 miles east of Wichita. Tell your friend thanks.
