I have started working on this image and although I'm not finished cleaning up the damage, thought I'd post a WIP and a couple of questions.

Sepia WIP:

I like monochrome, but I'm guessing that the original was probably Sepia given the early 1900s look of the clothing. Suggestions?
I'd love to straighten this, but I'm assuming that's not done.
I'm not sure how much of the marking on the barrel is damage versus scrapes on the object itself - I can clean everything up, but I think that might make it look too artificial. I love the contrast of the "Sunday best" clothes with the gritty environment and wouldn't want to lose that.
Any other suggestions?
Jo Ann,
You can do two versions to upload. I agree about the damage on the barrel that it is okay to leave unless something stands out as damage from water. Too pristine would take away from the scene. As to straightening, I would leave along and QC can change if they see fit. Thanks for posting.

Here's where I am (click each for a larger version): Monochrome, sepia and hand-colored (not sure if this is allowed - as a second image, not in place of the original)

Jo Ann, I see the fun in playing around with hand coloring, but I wouldn't plan on uploading because I know QC would not accept it. Plus, being such a old photo, coloring when you don't know what they were originally wearing, might not go over so good. :)
