Plaid Problem

Hello all!  Here's my first repair, and I have a small problem that has me stuck in "well now what."  The bottom right corner stumps me.  I want to make it as true to the original as possible, but I can't make heads or tails of what that's supposed to be.  Also, the red plaid shorts (?) that young man is wearing are pretty damaged.  Any tips or suggestions of what I should do in this corner? I would also appreciate any comments/critiques on how to improve this image further.  Thank you!

I think the plaid shirt tail is hanging out over the shorts. As to the plaid on the shorts, leave them dark. Not much shows anyway.
