This photo has a lot of noise, especially in the boys skin. The fact that it is already pretty out of focus hinders you in getting rid of it. My first attempts looked pretty "gummy." I took Bambi's suggestion and used the noise filter with these settings: Strength to 8, Preserve Details to 88, and Reduce Color Noise to 100. It only reduced the noise very slightly but at least it still looks like a photo and not a gummy illustration.

Any suggestions?

Jay, looks pretty good. I think you lost the boy's left ear. Also, the dog's chest is blown out, no detail. On curves, I set the white point at 245 RGB and the black point at 15 RGB. Also, I used Topaz Denoise for the noise. Don't know if you have that.

Thanks Kiska,

I went to their website and downloaded a trial of the Topaz software and am pretty happy with the results. I also fixed his ear and brought back some texture to the dog's coat.
