Well, in this one, you do have original clouds, so I would try to save them :)

Kate, I'd interpret the sky as mostly clear (clue - the sharp shadows in main image). Both of your files suggest a storm brewing, especially #1.

yes I saw those shadow clues. :)
and its not unlikely that the sun can be shining and a storm brewing, this is Vietnam and that is the type weather there.
Here is a copy off the original to show that there are clouds in this photo.
the only thing I have done to this from its original form is to change to BNW and adjust the highlights and contrast so you can see the clouds better

#1 because it is the closes to the original. I would be cautious about using gradients too much as they often don't print as well.

neither file #1 or #2 have a gradient.
In the original photograph there are clouds in the background, so I used clouds instead of the gradient above.

Oldfaded, I know that, but I was making reference to the last photo you uploaded and the photo that you showed on this post under the original. I was merely cautioning you about gradients. There have been other articles on the forum about separation--banding showing-- when printing and how 16 bit doesn't do that--- on a different subject entirely.

I like number 1 the best, and far prefer it to any no cloud solution.  I agree that the storm brewing doesn't preclude sunshine and although I would not have noticed it, there are clouds in the original.  Thankfully, as the stormy sky looks neat!

I might lighten the guy's face a tad and see whether it is more visible.

I don't use the gradient tool myself.
I have printed photographs after using that tool and I agree, and have found the same thing, the don't print well.
I have other methods that will stand up to printing.

and as for the clouds, I cant help what the photograph shows. :(
