Hi Jan

I wanted to let you know that I've uploaded this file: PageM_20_16_4x6 Final.jpg to Photoshelter.  I got a message that the file uploaded.  I can't say this is one with which I'm totally happy, but I gave it my best effort.  Damn yellow scratches, anyway.

Being the bright bulb that I am, I requested another with the same type of damage. Stoopid old woman: gotta have the challenge.

We share the same passion for punishment.  I am working on #17.  Do you think his eyes are open or closed?

Shujen, now I know who has the next restoration I was going to choose.  Glutton for punishment! His eyes look closed to me, but that was one of the problems I had with the monster I just uploaded.  Two of the faces had so many scratches that I couldn't get a good feel for their visage.  I redid them 4 or 5 times and ended up with them looking very similar to the first one I did, so I figured that was about as close as I was going to get.  Most of the photo was of a woodsy scene, and cleaning that up was a cake walk, because it didn't have to be perfect.  But faces pretty much obliterated on a snapshot are a bear  I literally was finding areas where I could only replicate a few pixels at a time or the face would get distorted.  It always amazes me that the slightest deviation from the original shading and shape can so muck up a valiant effort. Now that I see your close-up of the baby, I'm glad you have it and not me!  Good luck!

MJ, complicated doesn't even touch it!  The baby's nose is not to be seen at all.  How the heck does one restore that?  I had a baby (maybe the same one but a little older) whose face was pretty much all scratches.  Creating a credible face from all that is a nightmare! But my record has been choosing the monsters so I can learn more and faster.

At least that was the plan.  With job burn-out and my inexperience at this sort of damage, I fear my efforts would be better spent on the easy ones.  Problem is, then I feel as if I'm cheating, because I have enough experience that I want to work on images that really exercise the old brain -- I refuse to be one of those old farts who doesn't "use it" and therefore "loses it!"

Uh oh I think I just picked one too.
I vote for half open eyes and a rosy outlook in that most babies have sorta the same cute little noses.

I vote for closed or semi-closed. you can see most of the eye area except for one scratch across it, and the other eye seems closed.

Is that a 100% crop? If it is it will be hard to tell the difference at print size.
See that was easy, it always is when you don't have to do it isn't it? ;D

Thanks for the help.  Looking at the whole picture, the baby's eyes seemed closed.  But at 100% zoom (yes Max, that crop was at 100%), they looked thicker than fully closed.

This isn't in the forest and the carpet pattern is the only thing easy to fudge.  I started with the mom of the least scratches on the face and is about done with her except the right shoulder.  That was about a week of work (on my spare time).  The Dad's shirt is quite busy, so a little mismatch probably will be inconspicuous I hope.  I tried a little on his right arm and it was not as bad as a plaid shirt.  For the baby, I will try "a rosy outlook in that most babies have".   :D

Shujen, you're right, this one will take you a while.  I took possession of my scratch monster Feb. 6.  And returned it last night. As with you, I do the restorations in my "spare" time.  I usually start at 8:30 or 9pm and crawl into bed at midnight or 1am.  Hubby swears he's going to figure out a way to put an unobtrusive and elusive shut-off switch on my computer.  What I try to explain to him every time we  have the discussion is that I LOVE what I'm doing.  Even the frustrating parts.  It makes me feel as if I'm sending a little bit of good out into the world – and my opinion is that we can use all of that we can get!

Ah Margie I love it when you get all contrite and sincere.  Trouble is, I don't believe it for a New York minute!  >:D
