Title: Portrait of a young woman
Post by: Lynnya on March 09, 2022, 11:36:02 AM
Hi all.. just about to start on this image.  Does anyone have anything I could use to help me with this... ie dress, wallpaper etc.  would sure appreciate it if you have.

Thanks

I've looked at curtains, portrait backgrounds, and more and can't come up with anything like what I see in your picture.  Wonder if the mods would let you, with permission of the family, change the background a little.

This young lady has such pretty eyes!

All the backgrounds are different. Darn. The green channel gives you maybe three bunches of the flower pattern—above the shoulder on our left and just below the other shoulder. The rest seems to be painted woodwork, with the flower pattern in vertical rows.

I've been working with several moldy pictures lately and my latest technique is Spot Healing Tool with the mode set to Lighten (instead of normal) and work on all the darkest spots, then set the mode to Darken and clean up the white spots. Makes more accurate adjustments without blurring or color shifts like the normal Content-Aware mode. Skin tones emerge where I thought there were none.

I also use the Patch Tool in Normal>Destination rather than Content Aware.

Lynn, my thoughts are that this is a studio backdrop and any pattern would be subtle. At the very top of your restore, above her head, that is what I would use. It's going to be a lot of work, but I think it would harder to try and come up with the flower design and most likely draw the eye to it instead of the girl.

Thanks Margie that helps.

You're right about the timeframe!! I was trying to say what Margie said, keeping the background subtle and if you want to use a flower pattern it would be faint and blurred.

So... I'm working away on my restore and got a ton done.. suddenly ps says something about paint and the whole lot goes black.. I use two monitors and my primary wouldn't work .. I've disconnected the  second monitor and now the main one works again..on it's own... I'm half afraid to open ps in case my pc explodes!  I'm really not liking this ps2022.. seems like it has many glitches.. :knuppel:

I haven't visited the forum in a week or two and return to see that files are going back, monitors dying and PCs on the verge of exploding!!

I don't know if there are hardware problems as well as Photoshop bugs, but thought I'd post links to a couple of posts in the Adobe forums about problems with Windows 10 and the latest (23.2.1) Photoshop update. That's the version I've been using, but on MacOS - a number of longstanding bugs are still not fixed, but I haven't had anything new (or at least haven't found it yet) with this version. Are you using Windows 10?

Thanks JoAnn.. please will you take a look at this image and draw if you can where and what you think her legs are doing, also where is her knee cap? I've a ways to go before I get to the legs...

Here is my guess (or imagination):
Her left thigh is straight at us with the calf bending to the right.
Her right thigh is to the right and the calf is bending backward behind her thigh.

Here's my best guess at how this young woman is sitting. I'm not sure if schen and I are saying the same thing in different language or if our guesses are different.

I think she's "side sitting" - she's sitting on her left butt with her left leg itucked under her right. I've included a couple of stock photos and a drawing reference as examples. We can't see much of her right leg which could be bent at the knee, but as only the thigh is visible, it just goes straight out of the frame.

It's possible the angle of her left calf is a little tighter, or where the left thigh overlaps a bit lower, but I'd probably adjust a bit to make it look nice as there's so little that's clear in that area :). Hope this helps

For a blind person, you've done a spectacular job :)

So I've marked up your WIP with some suggestions. Assuming that blurring the background to avoid a million years of cleanup is OK with your distributor (and FWIW I think it looks fine, even though it's not like the original), I think you need to blend the edges into the blurred background a bit. I've done some of that to show (and I always do that on a separate layer so if it needs to get redone or removed you can do that easily). The hard edge of the hair into the blur doesn't work, IMO.

An alternative (and I can put together an example if needed) is to use the smudge brush to recreate the hairs that overlay the extension. I can look very realistic, but it's a lot of work.

The color looked too yellow to me, especially on the background, so I toned it down a bit. I also darkened the background a little as it seemed too bright.

The super smooth skin on the face I added a little noise to so it didn't stand out as much (again on a separate layer and reduced the opacity slightly).

Then there are the places where the body parts aren't matching with the original. I've marked those outlines. I know her fingers have a very unusual shape, but I think it's important to follow that, even if yours look nicer :)

I like what you did with the gray carpet for her to sit on. It's not the original but I think it works and she looks "grounded".

Hope this helps.

Okay.. I've addressed some of the corrections from JoAnn.. I'm afraid to touch the fingers cos I just know I'm going to mess up and go way backwards never to see normal fingers again.. JoAnn if you can fix the fingers that would be great but if you are busy maybe I can squeeze them by..
Please have a look and see what needs doing and if the changes I've made make sense or make things worse..this is where I start going back wards lol. Looking at it now I think the background is a bit too dark..

I agree with you that the background on the right is too dark - her hand is really hidden.

There are lots of little nitpicks, but honestly, I think all the things that are right outweigh the nitpicks. Why don't you lighten up the right and see what the distributor thinks?

Sorry! Didn't mean to send you off the deep end :) Here is an edited version with some skin cleanups, edge fixes and my take on the legs. I've put my PSD file on my Google drive (let me know when you've copied it and I'll remove the file) if you want to put my edit layer and multiply-blend-mode curve adjustment layer (for some shadows) into your file to steal what you'd like from it:

I am brand new to the group and just having a look around to see what I've gotten myself into.   :funny:

In my test image, part of the sweater was missing, so I got a similarly textured sweater, laid it out in the general shape and put a light mimicking the light in the photo. It gave me something to "draw from".

In this example, I thought I'd try to get in the same position to figure it out.

From that, I think her left leg is most likely going UNDER her right leg. It was very uncomfortable and uncomfortable to keep my left leg straight. Conversely, the right leg crossing felt quite natural, even with fluctuation in where it made the crossing.

That's my two cents. :)  I hope I'm not overstepping my bounds... I just wanted to get an idea of what the difficult ones look like and was checking out some of the posts when I saw the question.  Wow. Y'all are amazing!

It is amazing what you and Joann have done.

Thanks for the inspiration.

Hi Stephen.. no not overstepping bounds.. we are all here to help each other and from my perspective anything that improves an image to be "sent home" is worth any critique or suggestion from anyone in the forum. Sometimes I flinch at putting an image up in the forum cos I have worked so long on it I can't see the wood from the trees and just know I'm going to get some heavy duty suggestions.. My images have always improved from more eyes in this forum and I appreciate the time and effort folks put in to help make the final image as good as it can be. We are all friends here and when suggestions are made with kindness we all benefit. Welcome aboard my friend.
