Title: Looking for fresh eyes...
Post by: RosyBijou on March 22, 2007, 02:36:50 PM
Hey friends!
Here's my newest... I'm picking my way through this one and am having some trouble figuring out where to create her clothing boundaries.  The link that follows starts at a close up of the original and is followed by various revisions with notes, both on the images and under the image in the comments area.  I'm open to any ideas about how these vestements might actually lay on this young woman.

If you are interested, the full version images that follow are sort of a chronology of the development of this image.  I decided not to do any color or tonal changes until I'm done with finding damage details--the blue channel is nearly destroyed and when I messed with blending them, I couldn't figure out how to work with the info that I got  (admittedly, I'm not that well versed in channel manipulation--I have the book, just haven't read it yet! ::) )

I'm excited by the progress so far.  I couldn't tell that it was a graduation image when I first started it...  Haven't really touched on her left side much--am planning on using the restored right side for details on the left...

Hi Kerry

I wondered which brave soul would grab this one.  I downloaded the original and played with every technique I'm aware of in every color space and couldn't get as much as you did. So all I can do is wish you luck and admire how much you've gotten so far.  I'm intrigued, though, so I may play with it tonight when I get home.  Gotta get back from lunch and into the "real world" right now.

Later!

Glenna

Hi Kerry,
I really like what you have done so far
As I first looked at the close up I could not discern anything, but than from farther away it all starts to make sense. I kind of like the blue color of the image and wonder if this is really caused by damage since the surrounding paper is still kind of whitish. I'm excited to see how you will deal with the left side of the image. I stated that before in some other post -  it is not allways helpful to have a high resolution version of a photograph, that by itself is a much lower resolution originally. In my opinion it makes it harder to see the essence of an old image and looking at it from a distance makes all the details more visible.
But enough rambling... I think you are on the right track!

Thanks Glenna & Gerlinde,
Have been adding to my picasa chronology--crossed over to "the dark side" tonite---  It's a start, but it's hard judging just how much of her was lost in the crinkles (aside from "a lot"!).  It's easy to erase crinkles and creases, but not so easy to guess how wide or narrow her features were before they got crinkled.  I'm open to any suggestions...  Maybe I'll let her eyes & cheek bones go for a bit and finish cleaning up the other side of her face...  Do you think her eyes are too close together?  http://picasaweb.google.com/RosyBijou/OPR/photo#5045320671187739058

Hi Kerry...  I think if you have a look at this file, you can see how much the photo has been crinkled..
It seems to me that you could widen her a fair bit more...   Good job so far...

Regards
Robert

Hi Kerry

Her face does look a bit narrow, but I'm not sure if it's because you need to widen it or narrow the bridge of her nose, as you'd mentioned.  One of our other volunteers (Zapphnath) restored a companion to this one, because I remember the border.  I wonder if he'd be willing to send you the repaired version, which would then give you a more succinct sense of the proportions of the rest of the image -- not to mention saving you beau coup cleanup in that area at least.  It seems to me that there were 3 or 4 related photos with this circular pattern.

I'll see if I can track down that thread.

GG

Here's a post with the completed border, by Z.  I tried to make it link, but couldn't.  Sorry.

Glenna,
Thanks for tracking down the thread for me--after reading your post, I did find it, and it definitely does help to see the other images from the same batch...  When I requested this one, I also asked for one of the companion images & do have one--it has the blue-ish tones also and the border is in much better shape than this one  (Great minds think alike  ) so will raid the border from that image when I get to the point where I need a break from this one's face...

Robert, I've been looking at those red circles, trying to figure out how to best stretch that half without turning her into a mutant-- (I've done that to her a few times already!  :wow:  ) --I stretched the bottom left corner with the warp tool--but wasn't sure just how to do it with the face--but your post did give me an idea...

How's this for proportions...?  After all that warping, it never occurred to me to just move the pivot point & simply rotate!

I appreciate the input...

Hi Kerry,

You are doing a great job with a difficult image, I just wonder if you need to widen the right side of her face, where you took out the crease between her eye and nose? That eye still seems a bit close to her nose, if you get that side right you could mirror it to the other side, from just above the eyebrow down.

Getting closer, I think.  Max, I took your advice about the eyes.  I did mirror a repaired version of her good eye and then poked at it so it wouldn't look mirrored...
I think I need a little break from this image, as sometimes, it's looking good, and other times, it seems that I'm loosing the essence of the original.  I'm kind of stuck on this point because the original is missing one entire side of her face and parts of the other side are compressed from creases--so what is the essence?  I was hoping for comments on her face, specifically if I'm loosing the original character... Having a lot of trouble with her jaw & chin

Still have work on her robes--playing around with the shadows and details--open to suggestions about collars, folds, shadows, etc...  Thinking that it might be better to just fully darken that side & eliiminate drawing the eye to collars that are incorrectly placed...

Oops!  Just noticed that I forgot to turn on her nose layer (around her nostrils)  for the screenshot--so disregard that part--

Hi Kerry

I played around with your image a bit lunch, and based on taking the image apart and using the "flowers" in the border to try to align everything, her face looks a little fuller and less severe (I'm judging by what I see on our left). I'm going to try to post my attempt and see what you think.

And we need to have a talk about poking innocent people in the eye!  Please!  This is a gentle bunch, and there should be no violence!

Gotta go.  Getting ready for some training.

Have a great afternoon.

Actually couldn't leave it alone--NOW---I'm really gonna take a break...  :knuppel:
I softened her jaw a little and deepened the blue shadows along the side of her face and neck...

The paper around the border was also bugging me so I added a little gradient to give it a little more texture/depth...?

Hi Kerry,

This is looking really nice!  My only comment is that the inside circle doesn't look completely round, as it looks a bit wavy in spots.  Perhaps using the eclipse tool in PS as a guide, to level it out?  Otherwise, nice job!

I think I've done all I can with this.  I've been sitting on it because everytime I look at it I see something else to fix--but it seems that all of my latest changes only make it smudgy--the robes, in particular, don't look at all authentic to me--BUT, I think that it might be time for me to send this one along, as I don't think that I have the talent/ability to get it any more authentic.  :-\

Wow, Kerry needs to take a bow & then tell us how this one was restored. Oh, you can read how it was done from the link.

Hi Kerry

You've done an amazing job on an image I wouldn't have thought could be cleaned up to this extent.  I still think her face is just a bit too narrow (especially on the left as we look at her), but those perceptions are so subjective...  The main thing is that she's once again intact.  I admire your ability to see so much when the destruction was that acute.

Kudos!

Glenna

Hi Kerry,

You have done a great job on this one, I didn't think you would be able to get so much out of it. Bravo!!!

Thanks, Guys, for the kind words & help with this one.  I sent her along this morning...
