Title: Young Man
Post by: Candice on February 18, 2016, 02:22:12 PM
This one is a doozy but I wanted to try to see if he could be pulled out of the muck and mire.  I'm no where close to being done but wanted to throw him out here for you to see.  I'm not sure about the nostril.  I think it's actually out more....

Candy you are a very brave sole for attempting this one!

There is another photo in the galleries that looks like maybe the same man in a similar pose.  If so FieldM_14_5 may be a good reference for the nose.

Candy you've got me a little confused :).  When looking at the galleries the one you are working shows as FieldM_14_11_11x14 and the one I thought would be a good reference shows as  FieldM_14_5_11x14

Candice, I agree you are brave to take this one on. The problem is that so much is ruined and you have to guess. The background and his suit and hair look really nice, but we have no idea what the suit or tie looked like and had the face been preserved, it might have been okay. Because you have so little to go on, the photo looks more like a drawing. The skin looks great, but when it comes to the eyes, nose, and mouth I don't know that it works. This isn't being critical, but realizing you really need more to fully restore. Great attempt!

Well, it's been fun... The only place I've really been working on is the face.  All the rest, as seen above was just to see what it would look like.... but here's where he is right now.  I wish I were an artist.  I can see what needs to be done... Just doesn't always apply here.  I'm not disappointed though, you never know until you try and I'll keep working on him, even if I return it...

Here's a rework of the face.  Now I've overlayed it about 5 times to pull more details.

Candice, like this one better and think you did great for what you had to work with. I like that the features are softer with no hard lines.

Candy, I really like your new version, it looks a lot better I think :)!
The philtrum and spotlight on his lips looks a bit too bright to me (the philtrum also looks a little undersaturated to me), but otherwise really good :).
I think if you add a small highlight on the tip of his nose, it'll look less flat.

philtrum phil·trum (fĭl'trəm) n. pl. phil·tra (-trə) The vertical indentation in the midline of the upper lip. Also called infranasal depression.

If I understand you right,  Jonas, how's this?   And Margie, what about the suit and hair?  Ideas? Mind you I've only been working on the face. I'll work more on his neck line today so it's not where it should be. :D

Candice, I think what you did with the hair before looked good. Yes, I know the suit, shirt, tie is not original but you have permission to add those. Normally a no-no but otherwise we would be left with just a head. Also, I think your background before looked good before.

Thank you, Margie.  I'll take those suggestions and travel on.  ;)

Here's he is, in all his glory.  I've worked very hard on a picture that had no hope.  I hope it works.

Candice, I think it works very well. While it may no longer look like an actural photograph, it is a great job in doing a painting of the likeness of a badly damaged photo.

If you have a full artist on board Margie, you will get the desired result.  I know that I worked very hard on it and I hope you'll sent it back home or at least show them the love I put into it.

Thank you for your help and encouragement.  I sent it to Jonas, but have not heard from him yet.  I hope he got it!

Thanks Jonas.  I hope that someone can take it the rest of the way.  If they do, I'd love to see it.

HI Jesterjeni,

I think you have done a great job on the face and it is still a work in progress. Continue to work from left to right. The hand with have to look not so fresh as it doesn't look right with the rest, but soften the edges and more noise it will fit in. I think I would not include the ring as I can't tell whether it is damage or not. Once you get the face, neck, and hand--start on the suit. For that you don't need details, just a fill in since there are no longer details and any attempt wouldn't work. Last will be the back ground.

Thanks for taking on what I would call a non-restore.

Jesterjeni,

You did a great job with this young man's complexion. For some reason I find that he looks like a young man in the B/W version, but in color he looks older. Why, I don't know.  Maybe his jowl on your left is fuller. What I would not do is use the background you have picked, but rather I would take the damaged one and use a Gaussian Blur to cause it to blend, or in B/W with a dark gray perhaps use a gradient. These are small nit-pics on a great effort.

The ring is way too sharp for the rest of the image. And should the hand be there at all???

Kiska, the hand is there in the original that Candice posted on the other page.
