Title: Team challenge
Post by: Jonas.Wendorf on July 27, 2015, 06:04:11 AM
Hi everyone,

as you know we're currently a bit short on images. However we got one particularly difficult image for you all to work on as a team challenge if you're interested!

Here's the original:
(http://i59.tinypic.com/r20prc.jpg) (http://i61.tinypic.com/28meejb.jpg)

And a reference image:
(http://i57.tinypic.com/zx2nsw.jpg) (http://i59.tinypic.com/29qgvpv.jpg)

(Click on the images for the full-res versions)

The original has only two pigtails, don't let that confuse you :).

Have fun and we look forward to your WIPs !

Edit: If you'd rather try your hands on a different challenge, we have now two (http://www.operationphotorescue.org/forum/index.php/topic,4690.msg40501.html#msg40501) more (http://www.operationphotorescue.org/forum/index.php/topic,4691.new.html#new) added for you :)! Have fun with them and don't forget to post your WIPs

Jonas, what a great idea to have nother  group project!

What a challenge, I would not know how to start this one other than adding a monochrome adjustment layer to start with.
How to rebuild this little girls face?
I'm sure the owner would not want us to replace the original face with a cut and paste of the reference version...  ;)

This will be a good photo to practice "painting" skills on since there's almost no original detail left  :-\

Agreed :). This one deserves to be called a "challenge" ;)

But I know that some of our volunteers can work sheer miracles and maybe after the foundation has been layed it will get easier. As a team I think we might have a chance :)

Maybe a painstaking repair of facial features and an artistic paintjob of the rest?

After adding a monochrome layer and some levels and curves adjustment.  Then I tried some context aware healing on part of her face. How to go from here?

Nice start Hannie. There is one thing that bothers me about this photo (well more than one) and that is her left eye on your right. She is not crossed eyed and the way her eye is looking the other one should be looking off to the side too and it isn't.

I think the first thing is to find out who has been upsetting Jonas and caused him to seek revenge :knuppel:

Her eyes are certainly an issue, can't decide if the "V" is a split in the emulsion but one of her eyes has moved. Perhaps the emulsion for one eye is inverted.

I think you are right Athol.

Furthermore I would like to add

Hannie, fantastic start! Athol, much as I would like to let Jonas take heat for this one rather than me--I was the one who decided that you guys had been resting for too long and needed a challenge, and the real reason is that this picture means a lot to the little girl in this photo--47 years later.

Athol is right about the eyes as I think the water has caused the ink to migrate and distort. Hannie, and everyone attempting this one, make use of the reference photo. Yes, it is same resolution but a little smaller for the baby's face, but you can still use it with the help of the "Transform" tool. This will help with the nose and mouth.

Hannie, this is a really rough draft off of yours and it's like there is so much to work on; I don't know where to start. Her clothes will have to be mainly shading and I started to play with the other arm, but will not attempt to do the hand, but rather give the impression of it being in the fold of her dress.

Lovely skin, nose and shading Margie!

I think her "new" arm might be more to the side and less in our few?  If so, that would mean having to paint a completely new one (which I can't

I wonder what it would like if her mouth moved up higher ever so little, do you have it on a separate layer?

Hannie, I totally agree and was afraid mine wasn't looking right. I tried moving the mouth up and it doesn't look right and I'm now think the nose needs to come down and maybe a little larger. The problem is that the more I work on it the more the face ends up looking older. Think I will have to do several variations. The arm I agree and wish someway to hint that it is beside or somehow not try to bring in what isn't there. Thanks on the skin, I used it from the reference photo, transforming, and lots of layer masks and also changing the opacity.

Yes, about separate layers, but I may have merged visible. will check and post back.

Thanks,

Margie3

Okay, I think Hannie is right about the mouth, but to do that I need to bring mouth and lower part of face up, because otherwise it will make her chin too long. Having a too long face makes the little girl look older as well. Got some other errands to run, but will play with this later.

Margie, I think the little girl may be a little older on our project photo.  Her hair is long enough for 2 instead of 3 pigtails as in the reference photo.

Hannie, back to the drawing board. This next week I am going to be tied up (don't get your hopes up) with other things and hope the rest of you will attempt this challenge. Remember, everything that is posted is at full 300 dpi and can be downloaded to work on. This is a team challenge. Good luck and have fun!  >:D

I have been hiding under the bed :-[

Luckily I found a packet of pins there so if there are any complaints about aches and pains you will know I still have the skill.

Hello everyone!
Needed something to do so thought I'd give it a try. Not easy. Was able to use others work.  Hope someone can use this.

Hi Everyone,

I got an email back from the owner and also explained why the photo of her now looks more like a painting. Normally we don't want that to happen, but in this case the photo was too badly damaged.

QuoteHi Margie

I'm so amazed at how you took the face from reference photo to modify the other one. Seems to be moving in the right direction. I seems to look something like a painting. Is that how the finished product will look?

I was reading the comments from your team. Tell them I am so sorry that it's such a difficult task. However I sincerely appreciate their efforts.

Thanks again

Well, I saw this and couldn't resist taking a stab at it.  Not sure I'm completely satisfied with it, but maybe someone else can take this and tweak it further?

I tried a different strategy by copying the face from the reference and the dress/arms from a royalty-free stock photo (with permission from the owner).  I had to do a lot of warping and shifting to get it to match the "bones" that were visible in the original. I also had to do a lot of messing with the brightness, contrast, blur, noise, etc so that all the pieces would seem to be part of a whole. I think this is as close as I'm going to get it!

If anyone wants to mess with the layers separately and try to get it closer, I can send the Photoshop file.  :)

Memory Restorer, I like what you have done.  There was no way the Original face could have been repainted without changing it beyond recognition.  You added the face from the reference photo and gave her a new dress and arms.  I believe that in this case it was the only way to go because we had no reference of what the dress or her arms looked like.  The result looks really natural, good choice and an amazing job!

I added a little toning and contrast, also the other Earring (on her left ear) and some shading under her chin.

I agree, great job!

Just got this email back from the owner after seeing the latest: "Picture looks good to me. Cant wait for my mother to see it. Thank you so much. I look forward to seeing you on Friday."

Thanks to everyone who worked on this difficult photo. A group challenge is great because it lets everyone build on the others work. I really didn't think this one would be done in time, but it was. I will be taking the restored photo with me when I fly into New Orleans. More later.

Thanks!

Margie

Hannie, I like the changes you made!  They're subtle, but they really finish it off.  The "seams" around the neck and along the edges of her hair look much more natural now.  Fantastic!  :)

Hi Everyone,

I wish all of you that worked on this difficult challenge could have been here in Metairie to meet Tasha, and the photo you worked on. Often it is easy to get burned out and when you work in the "virtual world," but getting to meet Tasha and all the other great people has recharged my batteries and makes me so proud to be a part of OPR. Thanks to all of you that volunteer, and thank you Tasha as it was great to meet you and your daughter. Hope your mother is happy. P.S. Thanks for the NO Saints gifts.

Sometimes that image that you have really struggled with goes back into the system and that is the end of it. What a pleasure it is to get such appreciative feedback on two of the challenges.

Seem to recall that Margie, not Jonas was responsible for selecting them so you can expect she will be claiming her share of the credit.
