Hi ,
First post on the forum,
I have been working on this photo for a few hours now, and still have lots to do, question is,,, can the horrible border be replaced ?
Anything else you may see ( and there are lots) please let me know,, more eyes the better.

Hi Deearess,

Great to have you on the Forum. Even though the border is horrible it is something that you can assume was white to be begin with. Some of the times the border can help in color correcting. I would suggest making the border the same width all around and while you mask out the picture, you can then fill in the border white. In some cases it is easier to do away with border and extend the photo, but in this case it is easier to fill.

I haven't gotten any complaints with the way I crop set up borders.

1, if I know the original print size (5x7 is in the file name for this one) I'll set up a crop to that aspect ratio keeping as much of the image as possible.

2, if I don't like what I thought should be the original aspect ratio (5x7 in this case) I try some other common aspect ratio or go unconstrained, always looking to keep as much of the original image as possible.

Videosean, before you do any cropping check with your distributor, because once your photo returns Quality Control will take the original and compare to the restore. I get what you are doing, but rather confused about what you mean: " I haven't gotten any complaints with I crop set up borders." So basically you are saying if you don't like the border you crop it?

Deearess,

When I took your photo and color correcting--the border did not have the green overcast that yours did--I could see the border was white but discolored with some yellow. After color correcting, I noticed the difference between the skin tone. I know that when posting on the Internet that the color is not true to what you may have on your computer. Below is what I meant about the border. Notice that there is gray that I have added around the photo and I did that because other wise the border would have blended into the post.

Here's another way to do it...

When you correct white border (Kiska's way) please make sure the dimensions of the image stay the same as the original.

I've always considered white borders as part of the image. So the white would be included in the original dimensions? This 5x7 image is still 5x7 with the new border.

Kiska, you are correct. It is so much easier for us at a copy run when a photo is a standard size to measure it with the border. It would be a pain to have to measure inside the border. For photos that are an odd size or nothing left of a border (if there is one), we will measure to the outside of the photo. There are times when there is so much damaged within the photo, that we have measure for a crop that makes it smaller than the original. If a photo has a standard size as the extension shows and has a border--keep the border. You may improve it, but it remains.

Very nice! The only thing that I notice in this one compared to my color correction and Kiska's is the move away to less red in her face. Yours is toned down but not sure how you came to that? One thing with your current restore that will make it even look better is to do (if you are working in Photoshop) is to do a Levels Adjustment--like Curves too, but your at the end of your restore and not the beginning. If you go to a Levels Adjustment, do the pull down menu for RGB and you can adjust each channel. You will see in each of the 3 channels that there is clipping on your right hand side. Bring the white point slider in until it touches where the black part (image) starts--stop when it touches. I think you will find when you are done your image looks sharper.

Thank you for your help Margie, using your suggestion, it came a little "redder' and sharper, so I have now uploaded it.  Thanks again

Kiska, let me rephrase my post:
Please don not change size of photo and please use Kiska's tip on how to repair white border so dimensions stay the same!
