I'm almost done this guy who just may be the dad of Marshall Eriksen from 'How I met your Mother' :)

I'm stuck on how to select the background so I can wipe it leaving the few stray hairs at the top of his head.

There's just too much crap in the background to clone out.

Any ideas?

Thanks

kiska

No need to select the background. There's some clean areas circled in blue. You can keep healing from there and work your way out. The stamp tool at medium opacity, built up, around the face/hair will cover that damage.

Hi Typo, looks like you did a great job!
We can admire your restore even better if you would also post the before photo.  :)

If at all possible please leave the background in.  I know it is a lot of work to clone and heal the damage The area around his head is particularly important, the rest you can be a little more drastic in you clean up method.

Edit: just missed Kiska's tips on the cleanup when I posted this!

A lot of times it's hard to work with the older backgrounds but I have found Flickr to be of help.  For example: by doing a search with the parameters like "Old Paper Background" I was able to find this......

Old paper background by Dmitry Rostovtsev, on Flickr

You can do your own search.  However, hope this helped.
