Hi I'm Lillee and I am new to this site - hoping to be able to help in some small way with fixing photos - will take me a little bit to get used to it all but am very willing to help where I can
Hi from Michigan Lillee welcome!
You're going to enjoy it here. Take some time to review a few past posts and look around the forum to get a feel for how things work. Don't hesitate to ask questions if you get confused and you'll be the one offering advise to the new-comers before you know it.
Pat
Hi Lillee, welcome to the forum from Amsterdam!
Hannie
Welcome from Minnesota!
Welcome Lilee! You've come to a great neighborhood. Looking forward to seeing you grow.
Another warm welcome from Michigan Lilee,
Glad to have you as part of OPR. The Forum is a great place to learn and grow in photo restorations.
Mike
Hello everyone.
I think working in this group will improve my skills and help those who need their memories saved. I have just requested my first image and I hope I have not bitten off more than I can chew.
shadowmail, in middle TN.
Hi Tracey, welcome to OPR from Kansas. Don't worry about biting off more than you can chew as we have all had that happen. Post your before and work in progress and you will get lots of help. For posting your images I like using Photobucket that you see on your left hand side.
Look forward to seeing you on the Forum soon!
Margie
Hi and Welcome...
I am also new to this site and hope to help and learn. What a wonderful idea! I am in New York and still hear and see the devastation around me. So glad I saw this on TV and read about it in NAPP magazine..
It will take me awhile to get comfortable before I dive in...
:up2: Hi I'm Bridget from The Hague in the Netherlands. I'm also new to the site and hope I can make a difference.
Regards
Bridget
Hi Bridget and welcome from Michigan. It's always fun meeting new volunteers from all around the world. Looking forward to working with you.
Pat
Hi, I'm Richard from Valley Glen, CA.
I'm glad I found this organization, it's a wonderful thing you guys are doing. I looking forward to lending my skills to the cause.
Hi Richard, welcome to OPR from Kansas. We are glad you found us too and think you will enjoy the chance to bring back a person's memories.
Margie
Hi everyone, I'm new here from SE Tennessee. So excited to have others to learn with and from! I've been a professional retoucher years ago when my kids were young (and we were using Photoshop 2!) and now work teaching Photoshop to scrapbookers and community college kids.
I've seen some amazing work here, and am looking forward to a good challenge or two! Anything to give these poor people some memories back. My town was hit by tornadoes 2 years ago, we lost 500 homes, so I feel for anyone who has lost the most precious of possessions, their photos.
Hello to everyone! New to the site and wanted to say how happy I am to be able to participate in this program. Bringing a smile to someone who has lost everything is such a great feeling. Hope I can help and share ideas with other artists here.
Best regards,
Jose (chepo1956)
Welcome Jose! I'm sure you'll enjoy helping out here. Be sure to post your work-in-progress and share any tips on solutions you find to some of our unique restoration challenges. Feel free to ask others for suggestions on alternate approaches too! By sharing we all learn a lot!
Greetings from a new OPR member. I think this is a great thing we are doing and I hope to be able to come up to the level of the work I have seen here already. I'm in Colorado. We've just had our own flooding!
Welcome eoschlotz from Michigan! We have been watching the horrific flooding in Colorado and hope you were well away from all the devastation.
I think you will find restoring photos for families who have lost so much in natural disasters to be very rewarding and I hope you will enjoy growing your skills by participating in the forum. If we get an opportunity to conduct a copy run for Colorado, perhaps you will be able to attend; I'm sure it would be an experience you will long treasure.
Pat
Thank you, Pat. I was within a mile or 2 of the worst flooding. But floods here are a lot more localized than a hurricane! Keep me in mind if you do come to do a copy run.
Another Warm Welcome from Michigan eoschlotz!
Your skills will be a big help. Thank you for joining.
Pat and I are packing our copy stands and leaving for the Moore, OK copy run this morning.
As Pat said we hope to be on the Colorado Copy Run and hope to see you there. Until you have experienced one it is hard to imagine how grateful people are. It really brings home what we are doing and the effect it has.
Mike
Hello, my name is Anastasia, I'm from Ukraine! Glad to help people in the restoration of their photos!
Welcome Anastasia, from Minnesota!
Welcome from Michigan Anastasia,
I am glad to see you on the Forum. This is the place to get and to give advice on photo restores and sometimes to have a little fun.
Mike
Another welcome from Michigan!
Anastasia we are so glad to have you join us. We hope you will enjoy restoring photos with us and hope to see more of you on the forum.
Pat
Mike S., Thanks. Keep me in mind if you come to Colorado for a copy run. If I can work the schedule, I would try to help with whatever I can.
Eoschlotz, one thing that you could do now is to get the word out about how to save flood damaged photos. Here is a link to the PDF on the care: http://www.operationphotorescue.org/2013/05/restoring-photos-from-the-moore-oklahoma-tornado/ If you would like a copy of the PDF, email me at:
[email protected]We would like to do a run to Colorado, but it will have to be next year and we need to see there are enough people that will show up for it.
Margie
Margie, this may be getting off topic for this thread, but I feel the need for clarification. Getting the word out is a great idea (but getting kind of late), but how do you advise me to do it? A newspaper article would seem appropriate. How else? I may be able to get some access to the city web site, but that is only for my small area. I know where the local FEMA disaster recovery center is in town and I could try to contact them.
But as a new member, a bigger issue is that I don't feel that I can to speak for OPR or promise a future recovery opportunity. What do you suggest?
Hi Ed,
I believe Margie means that you should tell everyone you know personally, by email, Facebook or Twitter post, not to throw away damaged photos and send them the info on saving them. From what I see on the news, Colorado is still cleaning up. There's still potential for people to be getting back and starting the cleanup process and thus finding damaged photos. And even for people who weren't affected it's good information to have in case of future disaster.
OPR already has FEMA contacts and Margie will take care of any news releases. But as an OPR member you can restore photos and also let people know what they can do with their photos if they ever face such circumstances themselves.
Tori
Hi Ed,
Sorry for the confusion and Tori is right on what I meant. I do not intend for you to do media exposure for your area as that is something the inner team does. Plus, we are in the process of trying to network with other disaster organizations to help. What I meant that is within your own neighborhood or circle of friends you may know someone that would find the instructions on how to care for photos helpful. No, it is not too late as people may have photos that the instructions will help. For example, a person might have photos that are stuck together and figure they can't be saved since they can't be separated and they would be wrong.
I found your email address off of the new volunteer registration and have sent you the the PDF. Let us know if you have any further questions.
Margie
Hi I'm Alex from California, I usually use photoshop to prank my friends but I figured I could also use these skills for some more charitable work.
Hi Alex, welcome to OPR from Kansas. I'm sure you will also have fun here as well.
Margie
Hello everyone, I start volunteering for OPR. It's a really great idea you had by giving hope from restored photos.
I'm french from suburb of Paris and I'm sorry if I misspell the words. trying to understand everything you'll post on this website. Feel free by mailing in french ! ::)
Charlotte
Hello Charlotte and a big welcome from Michigan! It does take a while to figure out how everything works around here so don't be shy about asking questions.
When you are logged into FORUM HOME you will be able to see some "click on" buttons near the upper left side of your screen -Photoshelter click and pick, Upload to Photoshelter, Navigating OPR, and Techniques Handbook that when clicked on will give you a lot of helpful information.
Pat
Another warm welcome from Michigan Charlotte,
I would also like to welcome Alex. Glad to see we are getting several new volunteers.
Mike
Bonjour Charlotte, a warm welcome from Kansas. It always makes for more fun when we have volunteers from all over the world. We are lucky within are inner team to have German, The Netherlands, and Australia represented. Also, some patience needed when waiting for a photo because of difference in time zones. Great to have you on the Forum and don't hesitate to ask questions here.
Margie
Hi
new addition to this site from sunny Scotland - hopefully i'll be able to rescue a few treasured pictures and maybe raise a smile to someone caught up in a natural disaster
Doug
Hi Doug, welcome to OPR from Kansas. Look forward to seeing more of you on the Forum and this is a great place to post you work in progress. Remember to first post the original and then your work.
Margie
Thanks for the warm welcome.
As a newbie, maybe I post in the wrong place, so I apologise for that.
So I restored my first picture. I uploaded on the photoshelter.
I have some questions:
1° I saw 3 galleries. Are all the pictures waiting for restorations there ?
2° How often do you post photos on the shelter?
3° I downloaded the photoshelter application on my mac. I downloaded my first picture with it. Is it normal that I still see the photo I downloaded onto the gallery ?
5° When I got the email telling me I can download my picture, I saw photos in the gallery that I haven't seen the day before. And today they have disappeared again. Are they pictures that volunteers asked for restoring at the same time as I did ?
6° Now do I need to wait the response of the gallery's owner to know if I have to make others restorations on the picture or if it is OK ?
5° When can I ask for another picture to restore ?
Thank a lot.
Charlotte
Hi Charlotte,
The photos you see in the three galleries are available for requests from volunteers who want to restore them.
New photos are added to the galleries as the galleries become depleted. The photos are added as groups of about twenty photos at a time –the number of photos generally brought into a copy run by each family. All the photos for a family are added at the same time. This is the best way to keep a mix of hard and easy photos in the galleries and also all the finished photos for a family can be sent home together.
Photos are removed from the galleries as they are downloaded by the volunteers restoring them. If you requested a photo and it disappears from the gallery but you didn't get an okay to download it that is because someone else requested it before you did.
Once you have finished restoring a photo and have uploaded back to the gallery distributor you will get and email letting you know if additional work or changes need to be made. Be patient this may take a day or two. Once you get the email approving your restore you can then ask for another photo to restore.
Pat
Hi everyone, I'm Jim and a newbie to OPR. I'm hoping I can contribute to this worthwhile cause. I'm up for a challenge and I'm up for learning a few things on the way. Happy holidays everyone!
Hi Jim, welcome to OPR from Kansas. I think you will find this very rewarding. Happy Holidays to you too!

Welcome Jim, from Minnesota! This winter weather is a good excuse to stay inside and work on photos ^-^
 A warm welcome to Alex, Charlotte and Jim from sunny Las Vegas! I learned everything I know about photo restoration from my friends on Forum, so it's good to see all of you posting right away. Please share your works in progress on Forum, too. Look forward to working with you.
Bambi
Hi, my name is Teresa. I am really looking forward to helping out and being part of this organization. I hope I did this right.
Hi Teresa, welcome to OPR from Kansas. It's great to have your help and hope we will see you again on the forum as it is a great way to get help and also share ideas. At first there is a lot to learn, so don't hesitate to ask questions. Lately things have been a little slow as we are winding down on photos taken from previous runs of last year. Starting this weekend we will be teaming up with the Washington Library in Illinois to offer help to those hit by last year's tornado. Check out our homepage for more information.
Margie
Sending you greetings from Oklahoma!
Just wanted to stop in and say hello from California, and that I'm glad to get the chance to help out! I think what this organization does is great.
A warm welcome from Michigan Teresa,
Nice to see you on the Forum.
This is the place to ask for or to give help to someone restoring a photo. By posting the original photo and the Work In Progress other restorer's can see where you are and offer help.

Hi everyone,
My name is Peggy. I live in Idaho (and no, we don't pay less for potatoes Too Funny). I've been working in Photoshop for many years, mostly doing restoration for family, friends and a local genealogy society.
I'm self-taught...well, with considerable input from The Fab 3, Scott Kelby, Dave Cross and Matt Kloskowski, and also Katrin Eismann. I consider myself at Intermediate level. I do not have artistic skills enough to reproduce body parts (minor success on a few restoration) and I don't have an expert eye for perfect color restoration. Aside from these things, I can pretty much do anything. I've removed people from photos in such a way that it looks completely natural, etc. It's easy to detect when something is wrong (like blown out whites among other things), but knowing how to correct them is something else.
While embracing my limitations, I will press forward with the goal in mind that someone's mother or grandmother will be shedding tears of joy when they receive their newly restored memory.
The premise behind restoration is that it looks like it never needed to be.
Welcome Peggy,
Glad to have ya aboard. :)
Hi Peggy, welcome to OPR from Kansas. You can't go wrong with having input from some of best in Photoshop at their seminars and using their books. It looks like your are doing quite well by being self taught and by posting your WIP on the Forum you will get help from some of the best here. You mentioned: " I don't have an expert eye for perfect color restoration." All of photos need to be color corrected first and that is something that can be accomplished by using either a Levels or Curves Adjustment Layer. There are also other ways to being back the color to original. Only on rare occasions does a person have to use their judgement that the color corrections is going to take some additional tweaking to make it right.
Love you sense of humor and hope to see on the Forum posting your progress.
Margie
Hello everyone I'm Mike from Georgia new to operation photo rescue.
I'm excited and pleased to be a part of this organization.
I have personally seen the joy and happiness a restoration can bring to a family when it is presented to them.
Thank you for accepting my application. ^-
Michael M
Hi Michael, a warm welcome from Kansas. For you and all the other new volunteers, don't get discouraged because of the few photos we have left in the galleries. Right now we are between disasters and we are able to get a few from past disasters where people are able to upload to us. Until then keep checking the Forum for news and also the galleries for more photos coming in. Once that happens you will have more variety of damaged photos that will fit your skill level.
Great to see new volunteers coming in.
Margie
A warm welcome from Michigan to both Peggy and Michael,
Glad to see you on the Forum.
Mike
Welcome EVERYBODY!!! WOW! It's great to see so many new members. You all are going to love it here. If you get stuck with a restoration, come to the forum for help.

Because we are between copy runs right now this is a wonderful time to review past posts and pick up on some previous tips and suggestions shared as well as just get a feel for how things work at OPR. If you have questions there is always someone around here with an answer.
The galleries will fill up again after the next copy run and there will once again be more than enough photos to go around. Keep checking back for updates on our upcoming copy runs.
Pat
Another warm welcome from Michigan Megan,
When we do get more photos this will be the place to come to ask for or give advice on photos.

Margie
 Hi, Lev! A sunny welcome from Las Vegas.
I see that you made your first selection—and it's a crazy hard restoration. I hope you will post it on Forum so we can see how you approach it. And our collective genius might help you through it. Have fun!

Thanks Mike
off to try to find the right thread for some newbie questions :-)
Hi Lenny,
For general questions you can click on "The Tool Bar" under the Volunteer Planet heading about halfway down the Forum Home page. Then start a new topic for your question.
For questions, regarding a particular restoration you are working you can look under the heading "OPR Workshops," then click on Easy, Moderate, or Difficult and start a new topic for your question. It's always best to post both your original and your work in progress for these types of questions so we can get a good fix on what the problem and what tips to offer.

Thanks Pat - just managed to do that but not getting the image to show in the post though :-[
When I was a newbie trying to add a photo to my post for the first time it took me three tries to figure it out :)))
For instructions go to: http://www.operationphotorescue.org/forum/index.php/topic,2002.0.html
On the example that Tess has shown, where you see the last choice for image code--right click for copy and then you will paste that into your post on the forum.

Hello there, I'm new here from Philly. Just thought I'd say hello and introduce myself. I am completely self taught so I'm excited to try and help out some people and hopefully learn a bit in the process.
A warm welcome from Amsterdam Marslete, good luck on your first OPR restore!
Hannie
Welcome Aboard ! Any questions just ask. :)
Hi Marslete, welcome from Kansas and glad you could join us.

I like to help people as much as possible! Just holler if you need help! Regards, David
I can't think of a better way to participate in the human experiment than to repair damaged photos. Thanks for allowing me to help.
tc
Welcome TC! It's very satisfying to help out here, and, as Bambi mentioned, also a great place to sharpen your restoration skills.
TC welcome to OPR and the Forum. Not only is repairing the damaged photos rewarding, but if you ever have the chance, come along on a copy run. There is you will get to met the people behind the photos and hear their stories. It becomes personal and you get to see first hand how much what we do is appreciated.
Margie
Hello to all,
Just requested my first photo and can't wait to start. I know how much I enjoy looking at old photos and hope I can help someone else receive this enjoyment as well. I'm sure along the way I'll need help and advice as I work up to some of the more difficult photos. I took one that didn't look too difficult. So glad there is this forum to help.
Barb
Hi Barb, welcome to the forum and have fun on your first OPR restore.
I hope that when you take a closer look at your downloaded image you won't be discouraged.
There are some people lurking around here that add extra damage to the photos before they are send out to volunteers..... just kidding!
Hannie
Hi Barb, welcome to the forum and hope to see your progress on the forum. Never mind Hannie, we are all trustworthy. >:D

Hi all.
Just joined and am really exited to be part of this project. Think I'll be starting simple, but first it seems that a good look around these forums would be very useful.
Welcome to the forum Cptn, glad you joined us!
Hannie
Hi Cptn and a big welcome from Michigan.
Be sure to check out our Navigating OPR and Techniques Handbook. You can find both of those located on the upper left hand side of your screen when you are logged into the Forum Home page.
The conversations in Easy, Moderate, and Difficult categories found in the OPR Workshops are not only fun to read when time allows but they also hold a treasure trove of tips and techniques. You can bookmark any you feel would be of particular use for future reference.
All the best,
Pat
Hi Cptn and welcome from Kansas. Great to have you and Pat's advice will make you feel more comfortable as there is a lot to learn on navigating the site and Photoshelter. Also, The New Volunteer Welcome Center will be a big help: http://www.operationphotorescue.org/forum/index.php/board,36.0.html

Hi everyone!

Hello everyone! Hailing from Jamaica, W.I. Happy to be here.
Hey Shahen,
It's wonderful to see you on the forum. A big welcome from Michigan!
The pickings are rather slim in our Photoshelter galleries at present but hang in there. We are having a copy run this weekend in Metairie, LA and another one in Houston, TX next weekend. There should soon be plenty of photos for everyone.
In the meantime checkout some of the past forum posts to get a feel for how things work and don't hesitate to ask if you have questions. Looking forward to working with you.
Pat
Welcome, Shahen! Very soon we will have photos to work on. Glad you've volunteered to help!
A warm welcome from Amsterdam Shahen!
Hannie
And another welcome from Kansas Shahen!
Margie
Greetings from Spokane WA USA. I've been retired now for about 4 years from a graphic design job. I actually started with Photoshop 1! I tried some of the early graphics and photo apps early and thought that this will never work. Looks at us now! The capabilities of the new versions have been hard to keep up with but I know the basics. One of my projects is to design an Adopt A Pet tab for the local newspaper, The Spokesman-Review. There will be a couple of hundred snapshots of cats, dogs and others/ I do my best to make each little face look the best. I really enjoy it.
A warm welcome from Michigan Donaldo,
Glad to have you as part of the team.
Mike
Welcome from Michigan Donaldo. Love your avatar!
Pat
Welcome to the forum Donaldo!
Sounds like a great project you are working on!
Hannie
Welcome Donaldo, from Minnesota! I'm sure you'll find some of the photos we get to be quite a challenge :)
Feel free to post your work-in-progress to the Forum and questions you might have. There's usually more than one way to approach a restoration problem and I've learned a lot of new techniques over the years from other volunteers here.
Tori
Welcome Donaldo, from Kansas. Great to have you and love your avatar and the project you are working on.
Margie

Hi Lillee, Welcome to a fun group who are always willing to help you out in the forum.
This is Ken Stephens from Augusta, Georgia.
Last week, a friend in Kansas published a Facebook item on Operation Photo Rescue, and I signed up. Being retired, I am delighted that I can put my Photoshop skills to good use.
Welcome Ken!
Hi Ken, a warm welcome from Kansas and tell your Kansan friend thanks for spreading the word via Facebook.

Tori,
I have a question: After how long (or after how many restorations) does someone cease to be a "Newbie"?
Ken
Welcome to the Hotel Newbie!
You can check out any time you like
But you can never leave!
Hi Ken,
Had to stifle a smirk after Steelcraft's reply. I think the web master can answer that as there is a certain number of posts you make to the Forum before you shed the "newbie" label. Yes, it's dumb but the program does it. Only cure I can think of is to post often.
Margie
At 50 posts you become a "Junior Member"; at 100 posts you become a "Long Time Hero". This is built into the blog software and is not a reflection on your contributions to our photo restoration efforts!
Hello everyone!
I am new, my name is Delphine :)
Hi Daphnie..a very warm welcome from Florida 😀
