The handwriting on the photo appears to be a mirror image. Should I flip it? How did this happen?

Good question. It certainly looks like the image was flipped somewhere along the line. Are there any words on that little plaque that he's holding?
Hi Chen,
It says "David 8 1/2 years". It is not unusual to write that kind of info on the back of of a photograph so I think the back of another photo got stuck onto this one and the ink bled through. (I don't know if my English is making any sense here...)
If so it is safe to remove it.
Hannie
Hannie,
Very smart! I think you might be dead-on correct about this.
Kurt
Hannie, Stop apologizing for your English please. I have no problem understanding your posts at all.
I like your explanation. The white spots were caused by the color sticking to the photo above and was removed during separation of the two photos.
I could not make words out of the thing he is holding, but it reads like not mirrored (upper-right to lower left slanting).

I'm glad I'm making sense, promise never to apologize again! :halo:
It looks like the writing on the last pic is not mirrored, think it says "July First".
Hannie
He's holding a Bible and Rosary. This is probably his confirmation day. You're eyes are better than mine, Hannie. I tried to sharpen the photo and still couldn't see July 1. :o)
I agree you should be able to safely remove it Schen, it is not the sort of place you would annotate a photo in any case so I think it is just transfer.
Max
It was a bit of struggle to mend his jacket and tie. Finally, I am getting ready for the inspection. Thank you in advance for your effort and comments.

Send him home Chen, great job! :up2:
Hannie
Hi Chen
Awesome job! He looks great. I see two small things that might warrant another look. There appears to be a lighter spot of skin near his left eye (our right) that could be blended better with the rest of his skin color, and the transition between the shading on the right of his face at we see him might be a little softer. Very small things, and they might not even show up on a print. Ms. Picky Poo believes you deserve applause for this one!
I think this is the beautiful young man we've watched grow up over about a year or more of restorations. Chris did the first one of him as a toddler and another as, I'm guessing, an older teenager. If I'm not mistaken he's a member of the family that Chris met in New Orleans to hand-deliver their restorations. Am I right, Chris?
Anyway, this another treasure to add to their collection.
Cheers,
Glenna
Thanks Glenna for pointing them out. The light spot near the left corner of his left eye has real nice skin tone that I thought could be original. There is a band of brown spots below the eyes across the face. I was struggling to decide whether it is damage or freckles. I did remove the big one on his right side of the nose. Now you mentioned it, it looks more like damage to me. I will make a copy and start removing the spots. There appeared to be two light spots on the sides of his nose bridge. By any chance they were the depressions left by the pads of glasses?

Here is the new version with his face cleaned.

Nice Clean up schen.
Great job Schen!
There is a spot above his right eyebrow that could be damage. It is straight up from the outside corner of the eye. It doesn't appear to be part of the eyebrow. He looks good.
Johnboy
That is a lovely job schen. :up2:
