Just a suggestion: when using Smudge, try some of the oddly shaped brushes, as opposed to the standard round one, to get more of a random effect.  One made up of small, random dots, like the sponge-type brushes, may work better for this sort of thing.
(A little late, I know, but maybe you can try it next time).

Great idea.  I can see that using an oddly-shaped brush could eliminate the "clone" look.  I'm filing that suggestion away for the next challenge!
