Help from a man named Herb …
I’m happy to announce that OPR has received a hefty donation to the tune of $5,000 courtesy of The Herb Block Foundation and board member Laura Hutchison.
Pulitzer Prize winning Herb Block, better known as Herblock, was an influential editorial cartoonist who’s career spanned over 72 years – 55 of which were spent working at The Washington Post. Herblock used his art to document the political and social scenes of his time. In an effort to right injustice, many of his cartoons covered controversial topics such as racial prejudice.
The Herb Block Foundation was set up through a $50 million endowment from Block’s estate. The purpose of which is to protect the basic freedoms belonging to American citizens. The foundation also works to combat all forms of discrimination and prejuidice while seeking to support the poor and underprivileged of society through charitable and educational programs.
Where does OPR fit into all of this? According to Laura, “Mr. Block loved doing for others and I think {OPR’s} efforts fit right in with the kind of thing the foundation likes to do. Throughout his career, he was someone who, like you guys, always gave back. And who better than Mr. Block to realize the value and power of an image?
OPR owes Laura and The Herb Block Foundation a major debt of gratitude. To learn more about the organization, please visit http://herbblockfoundation.org/.
