Thanks everyone, it has been a good learning experience and it has gone.

I meant to mention a couple of noise/grain generator plugins I have been finding useful. Richard Roseman's Grain Generator v1.4 and Mehdi Grain Natural v2.0. Both are free and help to restore grain to areas which have been smudged or painted with a solid color. Both are worth playing with.
