DPI for scanning slides for restoration?

What DPI do I tell the service bureau to use when scanning slides in preparation for restoration? Since they are so small, I would think it would be different than the standard 300 dpi used for photographs.

Thanks.

Hi A.M.

Since this is not for OPR, I would think that would be your preference. It also depends on what you want them for later---printing, web, ? If you go go through someone like DigMyPics, they would have a recommended dpi.

The standard 300 DPI is for print not for film.  If you shoot 35mm film, the film size is the same as the 35mm slides.  Personally, I use 8x10 print as my guide.  I assume 8x10 is the largest size of print that I will hold in my hands while looking at them.  Anything larger than 8x10, they are likely framed/hung on the wall and looked from a distance.

And that translates into 3600 x 2400 pixels.

By the way, DigMyPics scans to 2746 x 1876 pixels
