Title: Flooding in the Central Plains
Post by: Mhayes on May 21, 2019, 03:36:48 PM
Hi Everyone,

Staying home today because my road is flooded her in Kansas--nothing serious, but don't want to get stuck or washed into a flooded dish. Right now Oklahoma is getting hard with tornadoes and flooding. Kansas a few tornadoes but mainly flooding. Also, do not want to leave out Nebraska.

We need to do a push to get the remaining photos done, so we can start helping those hit by the flooding.

That's more mess for an area already hard hit by earlier rains & flooding. Glad you're home and dry.

Thanks. I feel bad for those in Oklahoma that got hit double with tornadoes and floods. It was so cool here yesterday with temps around 53 that we weren't hit with the tornadoes or hail. I just noticed in my post that I didn't want to be "washed into a flooded dish." Their even trickier than a ditch. I haven't been drinking either.  :)

Mike, I believe when you signed on you were sworn to secrecy regarding the behavior of any or all board members. Just saying.  :police:

Oh Margie! Every time I hear Kansas on the news/weather I think of you.  I know you'll be careful and you must be sort of used to some of this but this so extraordinary and tragic.  I feel terrible for all those people.

I worked an extra hour at work because I needed to finish a case--big mistake. It was raining so hard that I had to be careful driving for fear of hydroplaning. When I get to my gravel road a half mile from my house; the entire road is flooded between fields. I worried more about stalling out that any safety concerns as to be washed away as fields on both sides.. When I got to the bend in the road there I could see the river and it was running high, but still have the dame further upstream to control the flow. The final yards to my house the road was covered and some had washed into my garage.

This morning I learned that at 1:30 am the police were waking people in an apt complex to evacuate because a lot more water was going to be released from the lake. The poor clerk at the convenience store where I stopped to get coffee was one of those. The water was already so high she couldn't get her car out. Why the City allowed an apartment complex to be in a flood zone is beyond me--even with a lake to hold part of it back. There is another branch of the same river that comes from another direction and no control on it.

My situation is mild compared to what is happening to others. However, it does make me nervous knowing that more heaving rain is coming tonight and some again tomorrow. Below is a picture of the river  behind where I live. The other two are of shot of where the water is being let out and you can see it as it flows downstream.

P.S. Mike, you will continue to wear an ankle bracelet and being under Pat's supervision.

This gives you an idea of the flooding and tornadoes around the country and is very hard to watch.

So awful for so many people! As you say, hard to see. And as far as daft decisions go, do you remember that some of the flooded areas in Houston were houses built in what was intended to be left alone as a reservoir for when there were heavy rains? No one told the people who bought homes there... Humans are so smart and so idiotic all at the same time :)

Rivers, lakes & the ocean are soothing and peaceful - until they're suddenly life threatening and scary. Thanks for posting some pictures

I'm glad you made it home in one piece - hope you can stay put for the weekend and relax a little (and I know that's hard when it's raining and the water's already high)

We're getting pounded again tonight.  It's suppose to be up to 6" in some areas.  We're on the high and dry but some of our surrounding areas are not.

Thanks, Hannie.  What a rough night but we're all right.  The only thing that really concerns us with spring in Oklahoma are tornados.  The wind was strong, but there is no damage to the trees on our land.  Others in the surrounding areas were not as lucky.  An El Reno trailer park, was hit severely. 2 people lost there.  This morning (Sunday) is cool and crisp.

Margie's creek bed is something else!!  I hope she stays safe!!

Candy, I had to laugh when you posted: "Margie's creek bed is something else!" That is the Walnut River in my backyard and yes, it looks like a creek compared to the Mississippi River, but a river none the less. I wish it were a creek as the two towns, Augusta and Winfield, downstream (but not streams-ha!) would not been flooded because the El Dorado Lake had to let out more water. While being on the high side I do get a little nervous that too much could cause even the high side to flood.

From that latest link, this quote drove home just how much water they're dealing with: "In 24 hours, 1.357 billion gallons will have been released from El Dorado Lake, more water than El Dorado and all its treated water customers use in an entire year"

Having once lived on a river which one year went over its banks and was creeping up towards our place (it stopped raining just in time, thankfully, so we weren't flooded) I understand something of the stress of the wait, hoping the rain stops and the water recedes. Hoping you stay dry...

Sure hope it'll stop raining soon over there.  (bring it over here, the country still has not recovered from the terrible drought last summer)

Right now, river or creek, it's pretty much a lake!  We drove around today and lots of older roads are on the verge of being washed out.  This is en extra ordinary rain filled spring.  Good thing it will go away soon enough and the heat will take its place........ UGH!!

Gosh, Mother Nature has been on tear. So heartbreaking. Wish we could direct some of the rain to you Hannie. Hope all of you are able to stay safe and dry.
