Title: Building Repairs -09, 10, 11
Post by: Candice on May 08, 2019, 10:36:46 AM
Caldwell 09

I've managed to correct most of the buildings and now am working on shadow/highlights.  There are two more in this set that I will work on.  I'd love to know where these buildings were.  I love the gazebo and little church nestled in the highrises.

This is Houston, Texas. The Spindletop restaurant (https://www.spindletophouston.com/files/4585/HOURH_P072_Spindletop_PG.jpg) is on top of the Hyatt Regency hotel. Looking at Google Street View led me to St John's Church (https://www.papercitymag.com/real-estate/historic-houston-building-teardowns-sam-houston-park-heritage-society-budget-crisis/) in Sam Houston park. The gazebo bandstand (https://h-town-visually.blogspot.com/2015/03/museum-and-old-houses-heritage-society.html) is in the same park.

It's a shame these are threatened by lack of funding to maintain them...

You're ahead of me Jo.  Thank you.  Love the links.

I couldn't agree more it is a shame these are threatened by lack of funding to maintain them.  We lose so much of our history to "progress".

Candy, looking really good. I'm not sure that the sky at the top is that dark as much as I think it was from dirty flood water.

I don't think so either, Margie.  I have a long way to go.    lol

Thank you, Mary.  Building 11 is still a WIP.  I worked on the sky before I went out to mow.  Lots of small damage.  Ick!!  However I love the church and the reminder of days gone by.

Really coming along Candy. You probably already saw this ... the church's boards are different than the original. Look forward to the final!

It's a good catch, Shadow.  I can't wait to get out all the scratches so I can start overlaying and looking for the little details like you shared.

Take a look at these outlines, over the original and then over your WIP. The pink outlines are the siding and there's an angle change under the left side of the middle window that shouldn't be there. The shutter on the leftmost window doesn't quite match either. See if this helps

There appears to be a boot scraper near the foot of the steps to the entrance that went away (I looked online to see if I could find an old photo that might show that area, but no luck)

Thanks, Jo. I will take a look.  This last one is a bear primarily because of the little damage.  Hard to get around that and keep the integrity.... but my motto - "Never give up!!"

Thank you, guys!  It's a bit like working on a certificate on this last one.  Damage is present and to make it right it's "inch by inch" work or "cm by cm" if you prefer.  :)

We did in our area.  South of us, around Geronimo had a tornado touch down.  No fatalities.  Also, according to news Ft. Sill sustained damage on the base.  Thank you for asking, Shadow.
---------------

I'm ready to send the buildings home.  They have been so much fun to work on. Frustrating at times, but fun!!
