Title: Taking a Short Break
Post by: Mhayes on March 18, 2018, 11:39:36 PM
Hi Everyone,

I will be absent for a little while as I recuperate from knee surgery this last Thursday. I had meniscus repair and just need to take it easy for awhile. Will be back soon.

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for all the well wishes and meant to answer sooner than I have, but sitting at the computer is not comfortable so I avoid it for now. It was a bit more than I expected and since it wasn't a knee replacement; I thought it would be a breeze--it wasn't. However, after 2 weeks I can walk semi-normal with the exception of getting out of the car on the driver's side. Getting in I slide the worked leg with the injured knee in semi-gracefully (translates: not at all). The harder part is getting out, the left leg is out, but the right leg doesn't seem to belong to me so I drag it out straight as a board except for a minor bend by the car door. Slowly the right leg drops to the ground like a new born calf. I glance around hoping no one is watching and then start walking.

That is all progress because getting out of surgery the same day and departure was more comedy--but painful. The hospital staff wheels you out to your car and my sister and brother-in_law are there to drive and assist. I didn't have enough pain medication to get from the wheel chair to crutches to the car without a lot of pain. I decide I can't go home because I can't do stairs. What I didn't know was I couldn't do crutches or anything more than looking like a deer caught in the headlights. So we go to a motel with a handicap room and parking in front. I get out of the car and can't manage the incline. After perched on my crutches for some time, the manager comes out and offers to help lift me to the side walk. He is about 6'3" and Joe, my brother-in-law, is 5'6". I knew I was about to be pitched head first on to the sidewalk, but they got it done. Both are probably under a chiropractor's care by now. I then couldn't figure out how to get over the door landing, so the manger gets a chair from inside and has me sit on it as he drags me tilted like a trash container to the bed where I am able to lie down. Interesting enough that after hr or so after taking a pain pill; I could walk with a walker when I got up. I can hardly wait till I do the 2nd knee (better condition) which was to happen 3 weeks later but will wait a few more months.

Thanks again and will be more active soon.

Margie

Thanks everyone for the encouragement and making me laugh, although Candy went too far.  :funny: I'm much better now and can get out of the car without looking like roadkill being dumped out. Still sore and not full range of movement, but each day is better. Glad to be back.

Taking a short break: Number 2.   :-\  One knee down, the 2nd one scheduled for surgery this Thursday. So will be back in no time, unless some other part(s) needs fixing, removing, replacing. You get the idea.

Before I forget I would like to say how great the Forum is going and enjoy seeing the remarkable restoring you all are doing.

Got well wishes from those at work, but then there was my joker cubicle mate who said: "Don't die." I'll pass those words along to the doctor.

Hi Everyone,

I'm back and hobbling along like an escapee from a nursing home. This was suppose to be the better knee, HA! It was worse than the other: torn meniscus, cyst inside the knee, and plenty of arthritis. Between sports earlier and a motorcycle accident I'm all cleaned up and hopefully good for sometime to come. Thanks for all the well wishes and bringing a smile during my down time.

Mary, I'll try, but already the doctor wasn't wild about me trying to walk so much and wants bicycling and swimming instead at the Y as they are low impact and burn calories. I can see it now as I clear out of the pool of all the kiddies.  >:D

Thanks Kiska!

Nice to have you back.

The funny part is today at therapy I was put on the bike, but I can't make a full circuit. So I would do have and then go the opposite way. Will eventually get there and will try not to be so impatient. Did hubby have the same thing or a knee replacement?

Glad you are on the mend Margie. Mom, brother and aunt all got new knees at the same time. This is what their PT had them use at home. Hang in there.

Swimming it will be and also jogging in the pool which is kind of fun or maybe it's just funny to watch. Shadow great to see you back. Did Mom, brother, and aunt have knee replacements or the the torn meniscus repair?

Margie, they all had total knee replacements. The little cycle can be had at Walmart, Target and a bunch of other stores. Have fun in the pool. Water running is a fun workout!

Shadow, my sister came off her 2nd knee replacement about 3 months ago and that is no walk in the park. Makes mine look like peanuts. Right now physical therapy twice a week is great and I have 2 more weeks to go. Today the therapist said she had a new exercise for me to try and I said I would give her a $5 if we didn't. I did the exercise, guess the $5 was too low.

Thanks for the tips and where to get the little cycle.
