Hi from Michigan Lillee welcome!

You're going to enjoy it here.  Take some time to review a few past posts and look around the forum to get a feel for how things work.  Don't hesitate to ask questions if you get confused and you'll be the one offering advise to the new-comers before you know it.

Hi and Welcome...
I am also new to this site and hope to help and learn. What a wonderful idea! I am in New York and still hear and see the devastation around me. So glad I saw this on TV and read about it in NAPP magazine..
It will take me awhile to get comfortable before I dive in...

Hi everyone, I'm new here from SE Tennessee. So excited to have others to learn with and from! I've been a professional retoucher years ago when my kids were young (and we were using Photoshop 2!) and now work teaching Photoshop to scrapbookers and community college kids.
I've seen some amazing work here, and am looking forward to a good challenge or two! Anything to give these poor people some memories back. My town was hit by tornadoes 2 years ago, we lost 500 homes, so I feel for anyone who has lost the most precious of possessions, their photos.

Greetings from a new OPR member. I think this is a great thing we are doing and I hope to be able to come up to the level of the work I have seen here already. I'm in Colorado. We've just had our own flooding!
Title: Re: new to this site
Post by: Pat on October 08, 2013, 11:48:10 AM
Welcome eoschlotz from Michigan!  We have been watching the horrific flooding in Colorado and hope you were well away from all the devastation.

I think you will find restoring photos for families who have lost so much in natural disasters to be very rewarding and I hope you will enjoy growing your skills by participating in the forum.  If we get an opportunity to conduct a copy run for Colorado, perhaps you will be able to attend; I'm sure it would be an experience you will long treasure.

Thank you, Pat. I was within a mile or 2 of the worst flooding. But floods here are a lot more localized than a hurricane! Keep me in mind if you do come to do a copy run.

Another Warm Welcome from Michigan eoschlotz!

Your skills will be a big help.  Thank you for joining.

Pat and I are packing our copy stands and leaving for the Moore, OK copy run this morning.
As Pat said we hope to be on the Colorado Copy Run and hope to see you there.  Until you have experienced one it is hard to imagine how grateful people are.  It really brings home what we are doing and the effect it has.

Eoschlotz, one thing that you could do now is to get the word out about how to save flood damaged photos. Here is a link to the PDF on the care: http://www.operationphotorescue.org/2013/05/restoring-photos-from-the-moore-oklahoma-tornado/ If you would like a copy of the PDF, email me at: [email protected]

We would like to do a run to Colorado, but it will have to be next year and we need to see there are enough people that will show up for it.

Margie, this may be getting off topic for this thread, but I feel the need for clarification. Getting the word out is a great idea (but getting kind of late), but how do you advise me to do it? A newspaper article would seem appropriate. How else? I may be able to get some access to the city web site, but that is only for my small area. I know where the local FEMA disaster recovery center is in town and I could try to contact them.

But as a new member, a bigger issue is that I don't feel that I can to speak for OPR or promise a future recovery opportunity. What do you suggest?
Title: Re: new to this site
Post by: Tori803 on October 18, 2013, 11:38:15 AM
Hi Ed,

I believe Margie means that you should tell everyone you know personally, by email, Facebook or Twitter post, not to throw away damaged photos and send them the info on saving them. From what I see on the news, Colorado is still cleaning up. There's still potential for people to be getting back and starting the cleanup process and thus finding damaged photos. And even for people who weren't affected it's good information to have in case of future disaster.

OPR already has FEMA contacts and Margie will take care of any news releases. But as an OPR member you can restore photos and also let people know what they can do with their photos if they ever face such circumstances themselves.

Tori

Post by: Mhayes on October 18, 2013, 02:00:29 PM
Hi Ed,

Sorry for the confusion and Tori is right on what I meant. I do not intend for you to do media exposure for your area as that is something the inner team does. Plus, we are in the process of trying to network with other disaster organizations to help. What I meant that is within your own neighborhood or circle of friends you may know someone that would find the instructions on how to care for photos helpful. No, it is not too late as people may have photos that the instructions will help. For example, a person might have photos that are stuck together and figure they can't be saved since they can't be separated and they would be wrong.

I found your email address off of the new volunteer registration and have sent you the the PDF. Let us know if you have any further questions.

When you are logged into FORUM HOME you will be able to see some "click on" buttons near the upper left side of your screen -Photoshelter click and pick, Upload to Photoshelter, Navigating OPR, and Techniques Handbook that when clicked on will give you a lot of helpful information.

Bonjour Charlotte, a warm welcome from Kansas. It always makes for more fun when we have volunteers from all over the world. We are lucky within are inner team to have German, The Netherlands, and Australia represented. Also, some patience needed when waiting for a photo because of difference in time zones. Great to have you on the Forum and don't hesitate to ask questions here.

Thanks for the warm welcome.
As a newbie, maybe I post in the wrong place, so I apologise for that.

So I restored my first picture. I uploaded on the photoshelter.

I have some questions:

1° I saw 3 galleries. Are all the pictures waiting for restorations there ?

2° How often do you post photos on the shelter?

3° I downloaded the photoshelter application on my mac. I downloaded my first picture with it. Is it normal that I still see the photo I downloaded onto the gallery ?

5° When I got the email telling me I can download my picture, I saw photos in the gallery that I haven't seen the day before. And today they have disappeared again. Are they pictures that volunteers asked for restoring at the same time as I did ?

6° Now do I need to wait the  response of  the gallery's owner to know if I have to make others restorations on the picture or if it is OK ?

5° When can I ask for another picture to restore ?

Thank a lot.
Charlotte

Hi Charlotte,

The photos you see in the three galleries are available for requests from volunteers who want to restore them.

New photos are added to the galleries as the galleries become depleted.  The photos are added as groups of about twenty photos at a time –the number of photos generally brought into a copy run by each family.  All the photos for a family are added at the same time.  This is the best way to keep a mix of hard and easy photos in the galleries and also all the finished photos for a family can be sent home together.

Photos are removed from the galleries as they are downloaded by the volunteers restoring them.  If you requested a photo and it disappears from the gallery but you didn't get an okay to download it that is because someone else requested it before you did.

Once you have finished restoring a photo and have uploaded back to the gallery distributor you will get and email letting you know if additional work or changes need to be made.  Be patient this may take a day or two.  Once you get the email approving your restore you can then ask for another photo to restore.

Hi Teresa, welcome to OPR from Kansas. It's great to have your help and hope we will see you again on the forum as it is a great way to get help and also share ideas. At first there is a lot to learn, so don't hesitate to ask questions. Lately things have been a little slow as we are winding down on photos taken from previous runs of last year. Starting this weekend we will be teaming up with the Washington Library in Illinois to offer help to those hit by last year's tornado. Check out our homepage for more information.

Hi everyone,

My name is Peggy. I live in Idaho (and no, we don't pay less for potatoes Too Funny). I've been working in Photoshop for many years, mostly doing restoration for family, friends and a local genealogy society.

I'm self-taught...well, with considerable input from The Fab 3, Scott Kelby, Dave Cross and Matt Kloskowski, and also Katrin Eismann. I consider myself at Intermediate level. I do not have artistic skills enough to reproduce body parts (minor success on a few restoration) and I don't have an expert eye for perfect color restoration. Aside from these things, I can pretty much do anything. I've removed people from photos in such a way that it looks completely natural, etc. It's easy to detect when something is wrong (like blown out whites among other things), but knowing how to correct them is something else.

While embracing my limitations, I will press forward with the goal in mind that someone's mother or grandmother will be shedding tears of joy when they receive their newly restored memory.

The premise behind restoration is that it looks like it never needed to be.

Hi Peggy, welcome to OPR from Kansas. You can't go wrong with having input from some of best in Photoshop at their seminars and using their books. It looks like your are doing quite well by being self taught and by posting your WIP on the Forum you will get help from some of the best here. You mentioned: " I don't have an expert eye for perfect color restoration." All of photos need to be color corrected first and that is something that can be accomplished by using either a Levels or Curves Adjustment Layer. There are also other ways to being back the color to original. Only on rare occasions does a person have to use their judgement that the color corrections is going to take some additional tweaking to make it right.

Love you sense of humor and hope to see on the Forum posting your progress.

Hi Michael, a warm welcome from Kansas. For you and all the other new volunteers, don't get discouraged because of the few photos we have left in the galleries. Right now we are between disasters and we are able to get a few from past disasters where people are able to upload to us. Until then keep checking the Forum for news and also the galleries for more photos coming in. Once that happens you will have more variety of damaged photos that will fit your skill level.

Great to see new volunteers coming in.

Hi Megan and a warm welcome from Michigan!

Because we are between copy runs right now this is a wonderful time to review past posts and pick up on some previous tips and suggestions shared as well as just get a feel for how things work at OPR.  If you have questions there is always someone around here with an answer.

The galleries will fill up again after the next copy run and there will once again be more than enough photos to go around.  Keep checking back for updates on our upcoming copy runs.

Hi Lenny,

For general questions you can click on "The Tool Bar" under the Volunteer Planet heading about halfway down the Forum Home page.  Then start a new topic for your question.

For questions, regarding a particular restoration you are working you can look under the heading "OPR Workshops," then click on Easy, Moderate, or Difficult and start a new topic for your question.  It's always best to post both your original and your work in progress for these types of questions so we can get a good fix on what the problem and what tips to offer.

When I was a newbie trying to add a photo to my post for the first time it took me three tries to figure it out :)))

For instructions go to:  http://www.operationphotorescue.org/forum/index.php/topic,2002.0.html
On the example that Tess has shown, where you see the last choice for image code--right click for copy and then you will paste that into your post on the forum.

TC welcome to OPR and the Forum. Not only is repairing the damaged photos rewarding, but if you ever have the chance, come along on a copy run. There is you will get to met the people behind the photos and hear their stories. It becomes personal and you get to see first hand how much what we do is appreciated.

Hi Cptn and a big welcome from Michigan.

Be sure to check out our Navigating OPR and Techniques Handbook.  You can find both of those located on the upper left hand side of your screen when you are logged into the Forum Home page.

The conversations in Easy, Moderate, and Difficult categories found in the OPR Workshops are not only fun to read when time allows but they also hold a treasure trove of tips and techniques.  You can bookmark any you feel would be of particular use for future reference.

All the best,
Pat

Hey Shahen,

It's wonderful to see you on the forum.  A big welcome from Michigan!

The pickings are rather slim in our Photoshelter galleries at present but hang in there.  We are having a copy run this weekend in Metairie, LA and another one in Houston, TX next weekend.  There should soon be plenty of photos for everyone.

In the meantime checkout some of the past forum posts to get a feel for how things work and don't hesitate to ask if you have questions.  Looking forward to working with you.

Greetings from Spokane WA USA. I've been retired now for about 4 years from a graphic design job. I actually started with Photoshop 1! I tried some of the early graphics and photo apps early and thought that this will never work. Looks at us now! The capabilities of the new versions have been hard to keep up with but I know the basics. One of my projects is to design an Adopt A Pet tab for the local newspaper, The Spokesman-Review. There will be a couple of hundred snapshots of cats, dogs and others/ I do my best to make each little face look the best. I really enjoy it.

Hi Ken,

Had to stifle a smirk after Steelcraft's reply. I think the web master can answer that as there is a certain number of posts you make to the Forum before you shed the "newbie" label. Yes, it's dumb but the program does it. Only cure I can think of is to post often.
