Title: Fathers Day Tribute
Post by: Mike S. on June 15, 2012, 10:41:04 PM
Happy Father's Day to all the Fathers out there.

Below are my father and grandfather.  That's my older brother Wayne on the lower step and me on the upper step next to my grandfather.  I would like to make a special Happy Father's Day wish for the speedy recovery of Tess's Husband Craig, who many of you know is recovering from serious burns.

This is my dad in 1967 with his first grandchild, Michael Jr. our son.  Dad will be 87 this July and is still struggling greatly with the passing of my mom two years ago.  They had been married 67 years.  Dad still lives in, and maintains, the home with large beautifully landscaped yard he and my mom built together when I was in high school.  He is only about 10 minutes from Mike and I and we see him frequently.

Here is a picture of me and my father when I was about 7 or 8 years old.

It's wonderful to see photos of members with their fathers.

Sadly, I lost my Dad when he was only 44, right after he retired from the Navy.  This photo is in Japan, and my mom wrote on the back of the photo that he was 24.  Very handsome guy.

Glenna, how sad that he didn't get to know the adult you've become.  I'm sure he would have been very proud of you and your family.  What a treasure this photo is.

It is fun to share photos and get to know more about our fellow volunteers.  I hope over the next few days more of you will have a opportunity to post memories of your fathers here.

Thanks, Pat.  I wish we'd known each other in our later years, too.  The irony is that he was born in Gainesville, Florida, and he always talked about retiring to Florida and getting a sailboat.  He ended up retiring in Maine, which he came to love, and I moved to Florida and became a sailor.

I would have loved for him to meet IM, because I think they would have really liked each other.  I've had pretty bad luck with the men in my family.  About a year and a half after dad died, my brother died, also of brain cancer.  He was only 15.  I often wonder what it would be like to have had both of them in my life - they were so vibrant and intelligent and full of fun.  I imagine we would have had a great time. I like to think of them as my special guardian angels.

I, too, hope that more volunteers will post photos of them with their dads.  They're such treasures.

Shujen, you look like a little doll. And your dad is very handsome (like father, like son!).  I hope he's still alive.  Is he with you?

Ladies, you made me blush but that was more than half a century ago.  When I was born, we were just recovering from the wars and photos were luxury item.  I have only three baby pictures including this one before my first day of school photo and I am the only one in the family with baby pictures.  My father lived to 90 years old.  He was very healthy and active through his life.  Unfortunately an infection from a simple procedure to install a stent in the bile duct was undetected until it was too late.
