Still a WIP but getting nearer
Any suggestions about his face. Even though overexposed I suspect a more natural colour would help and I am playing with multiple versions. There is a little more information in the blue chan but creating a natural but overexposed look is proving a challenge.
The face in the WIP has only had a colour change, eyes, lips and teeth are unchanged
Thanks

Athol,
It's looking good and I agree about overexposed and his face seems to be mainly yellow. First I played around by duplicating the later and having that layer at multiply. That didn't help the face, but it did help with his graduation gown. I'm wondering if you could (even on a separate copy) work on the face by using the blue channel for the B/W and use some of the tips on the recent posts and the link BJTX posted.
It's great to see you having fun. ;) We got more like em in the hold.
Margie
Thanks Margie,
For his face I have been trying both multiply of the original and using the blue chan, multiply seem to be best. I have taken a hue from something like his hand.
I hadn't thought to treat his gown as well so will have a look
You will be pleased to know that is is a wet day here and some of us have been beavering away while you slept :halo:

Hey not so fast Beaver Man---I'm still up! His face is looking a lot better and you have to consider maybe the original didn't have good skin color because of the flash blowing the highlights out.
Carry on Woodchuck, I mean Beaver. ;)
Margie
What a great job!
The face looks better than it did in the original, I'm sure it was over exposed.
If you like to brighten up the skin color some you could add a Selective Color adjustment layer.
In the whites lower the cyan a fair amount and increase yellow a little, I made sure the whites of the eyes and the teeth were masked out.

I realize the flash has blown out the color of the gown. But I bet this guy would love to see himself NOT in a pink one. 8) Plus the woman off his left shoulder has a deep red on.

Athol, your work is looking nice. I really like the way you cropped the image. That made an overall improvement. :up2:
BJ (only a viewer of MASH - never had a part :( )
Thanks everyone.
I suspect that I will work on his face to see how far I can get to eliminate the overexposure and then adjust his gown so it looks compatible and not pink. Thanks Kiska.
I would like to get some tonal variation in his face Hannie but the sun is out today so I think a rest day is indicated
Glad you liked the crop BJ, it allowed me to get rid of the area on the LHS which was unrecoverable. We are seeing MASH again with episodes not seen before and the residuals must be enormous
Onwards and upwards :)
Athol
You better enjoy that sun while it is still there Athol!
You can try to increase contrast in the facial area with a curves layer:

(the red was increased separately)
Hannie
REDS are hard to work with. Lovely work!
This should be nearer the money. I have left his robe looking like the flash caused over exposure and tried for a similar look to his face.
And REDS are hard work. I have been using the HSB display instead of RGB in the Info panel and am amazed at how critical saturation is.
What is the concensus ;)

Beee-autiful!
Great job Athol.

Athol, this looks beautiful and stayed true to the original, but yet you improved it!
Margie
Rockin the restoration again, Athol!
Bambi
Thanks all, sent it airmail.
Margie, the other "R" word was in my thoughts doing this. It had the most "R" of any I have done but glad it seemed to have worked

Margie,
I have tried, but cannot find the post you mentioned by BJTX. Can you please send me the link?
Jay
Hi Jay,
To save Margie time, I'll jump in --
Probably, she is referring to the link I posted pointing to the many articles by Janine Smith on Tipsquirrel.
http://www.tipsquirrel.com/index.php/author/landailyn/ (http://www.tipsquirrel.com/index.php/author/landailyn/)
Thanks Betty.
Jay, a good way to find an individual post of a volunteer is to click on their name on a post (need to be logged in) and it will take you to their profile page. Once you are there, scroll to the bottom and look for: "Show the last post of this person." This will bring up all of their post and you can scroll through all of their post. Other than having a certain post bookmarked, it would be hard to find.
Margie
Thanks Margie,
It's going to take me a while to get used to how this site works and all the nuances of the forum.
I downloaded my selected image and started working on it today. I in a while, know once it is near completion, I will want to post it on this forum for review and suggestions before I upload it to the quality control judges. That will bring about more questions. I got a Photobucket account the other day and I believe that you link your forum message to the image on that site, correct? Do you resize the image before you upload it to photobucket? If so what size do you need post on this forum or does it automatically resize to fit the window?
Jay
Hi Jay, the photo will automatically resize for the forum but we usually suggest you make a copy of your work in progress and 'save for web' so the file size is not too large. Also the copy should not have any exif data on it.
A suggestion Tess
When saving for the web don't reduce the size. Having access to the largest image possible allows those commenting the best chance to find detail which otherwise could be lost.
Athol
In Photoshop when you save for web what "quality" setting do you recommend? It defaults at 60, do you go higher or lower than that? Also, do you put the metadata setting on "none" or on "copyright and contact info?"
Jay
Jay, good advice from Athol and Tess on how to save. May I also mention that you keep a folder on your hard drive and label it Photobucket. The reason is that by keeping it in that folder you won't run the risk of deleting the photos and the link to Photobucket. Once the photo is moved or deleted you will no longer having it shown in the post. Here is a tutorial: http://www.operationphotorescue.org/forum/index.php/topic,2002.0.html
I make a 2nd copy of my work and save it to my Photobucket folder and in Photoshop I go up to Image and change the original resolution from 300 to 120 dpi. The only time I might keep it at 300 dpi is when the photo is very small like a 3.5 x 3.5. I save this photo with a different extension. I also go up Edit and change the Profile to sRGB. If your workspace has stayed at that, then you don't need to worry. When I work on an image with many layers I am working in Adobe RGB, but then change my profile back to sRGB as that is what the printer wants for the color profile.
If you are doing Photobucket I would put the copyright as Operation Photo Rescue. I really don't bother with the rest.
