Title: Old school picture
Post by: HellZiggy on April 11, 2012, 02:07:47 AM
I'm sure Bambi thinks I've fallen off the face of the earth, but I've been plugging away at this one when I can.
I've got a bit of work to do still but I'm wondering if any of you can tell what the banner says. I can only make out a few letters.

Hi Sharon,

I tried everything but all I can see is something like <Festont  School> and then something like a date?
I did an elaborate search for historic Joplin schools but found no name that even comes close so the photo is probably from another town.

Unless anyone else can figure it out I would just leave the shapes of the letters that are there but not worry too much about what they represent?

Hi Sharon,

I've going to be out and about today, but when I have a chance I will contact the owner. Looking good so far.

Thanks,

Margie

Sharon, I talked to the owner and she didn't have the photo handy, but she said she really had no idea, but she did appreciated us going up and beyond what was expected to restore the photo. She is not going to be bothered that we couldn't restore that information and should she find out, she will call me.

Thanks,

Margie

Ok, thanks for checking! I'll just try to keep as much of what does show as possible then, but won't worry about figuring out the actual words.

Sharon, the owner was so pleased that we were going the extra mile to get it correct. I have a feeling that seeing this photo all cleaned up and go longer green is going to mean the world to her. I agree on keep what you can and what is unreadable will have to stay that way.

This has ended up being the most challenging restore I've done to date. I think I've reached that point where it feels like everything I do to it now isn't really helping. I'd love a fresh set of eyes to give me ideas, and to let me know what else needs to be done.

That was, indeed, a big undertaking.  Your progress looks good  :up2:

Hi, Sharon:

Great job. How did you do the girl's face (middle row, second from left)?

Still a bit of stain over the window on our left. You might be able to use pieces of the window on the right to cover the damage with a little Free Transform to Flip Horizontal and fit precisely. If I were working on this, I would then make a New Layer set to Soft Light and with a soft brush set at between 11-22%, brush with white to Dodge the dark spots and black to increase the color and definition.

Here is a link: http://www.festus.k12.mo.us/

Sharon,

You have made some real progress. I too would like to know how you restored the face.

As for the stain on the viewer left. Looking at the window on the viewer right it looks like it might have some good material. Perhaps copying it, flip it horizontally and place it over the stained window. When you place it reduce the opacity of the copy slightly so you can see the alignment of the copy with the background. Then bring the opacity back to 100%. I notice some clapboards part way down that left window that could be done the same way. I wouldn't think you would not need to flip the boards just place them as you did the window. I would suggest making your selections on a separate layer, and perhaps saving the selections. Then select the background layer copy and paste. Then move the layers in place.
