Title: Storms Ravage Michigan
Post by: Pat on March 16, 2012, 04:38:54 PM
Good Afternoon Everyone,

Last evening major storms traveled across Lower Michigan.  There were numerous funnel clouds, at least one tornado, and hail reported to range from marble to baseball in size.

A tornado estimated to be an F3 severely damaged at least 100 homes in the small town of Dexter which is just west of our home and just north of Ann Arbor.  Thankfully no people were reported to have been hurt.  It was reported that some streets in Ann Arbor were flooded with six feet of water immediately after the tornado passed through Dexter.

Mike and I are very thankful that we and our neighborhood were safe throughout.

Mike has notified the local television station as to the proper procedures to follow when trying to salvage storm damaged photos in addition to giving them information about OPR.  It is possible that several months from now, after the people of Dexter and the surrounding area have had some time to recover, we will be able to conduct in a mini copy run.  We will keep you posted.

Pat and Mike,

So sorry to see the destruction in Michigan, but great that no one was hurt. Tonight on the news it sounds like it might have been an F-3 tornado which makes it unbelievable that no one was hurt. One couple was in their car protected by a car wash---that had to be frightening as you would have thought the care would have been suck right on out.

That is fantastic that Mike is going to do an interview at the station so soon. This hopefully will save someone throwing away photos that could be saved.

Thanks so much!

Margie

Pat, thanks for posting the news report link.  I'm so glad you and Mike were out of harm's way, what an unnerving experience it must have been to see a storm like that approach.
It is great that you and Mike are planning a mini copy run and getting the word out to how to save water damaged photos.

Hi Everyone,

Check out the following links.  On the first one scroll about halfway down and under the "Quick Links" you'll see Operation Photo Rescue, Inc. at the top of the list.

Mike contacted our local news station and they not only were happy to post info about OPR numerous places on their website, they will be interviewing him live this morning.

In this link you will see some videos you can watch under "Tornadoes Touch Down" and also on that page a little farther down if you watch the "Top Story" headline you will see Operation Photo Rescue.

Hi Everyone,

Following is a link to Mike's television interview.  He did a great job.  It was a little disappointing that they had to rush it and cut it a bit short because the station was given breaking news about an accident that occurred in Pontiac, MI that left 8000 people without power.  On the other hand I think the station has done a superb job placing information about OPR and links to OPR numerous places on their website –see my previous post for some links regarding that.

Hi Mike, I think you did a great job and especially being able to get on TV so soon after the tornado hit. Getting that information will safe a lot of people from throwing their photos out. Since the program aired, we have already had two volunteers in the area signed.

Thanks!

Margie

Great job, Mike.  So valuable to get the word out to people before they throw those photographs away.

Thank you everyone for your kind comments.

Personally after watching the show, I saw a lot of things I could have improved.  I did want to say a lot more but time did not allow it.  They posted  my original email with a couple of words changed and the example photos sent with the email.  The anchor Lauren Sanders, who is an extremely nice lady, was excited about the photos (6 each, before and after) but they did not show them for a lack of time.
