Title: The OPR Gallery is now open!
Post by: John on February 18, 2008, 01:57:09 PM
I am happy to report that we have finally opened the OPR Gallery where we can showcase the fantastic work that has been done by our worldwide community.  The gallery will be a repository for several types of collections.  As you can imagine, one of the most frequent requests we've had regarding a gallery is to have a place where we can display before and after comparisons.  I have set up such a place at the following link: http://www.operationphotorescue.org/forum/index.php?action=gallery;cat=3.

Please create a single image of your before/after with the longest side set at no more than 800px.  Upload the picture to the 'Before/After' gallery and it will be reviewed/approved and added to the gallery.

OPR thanks you for all of your continued work on these images.  We continue to get feedback on a weekly basis from the individuals whose lives you have so deeply touched.

If you'd like to donate to assist OPR in covering operational costs, you can do so at this link: http://www.operationphotorescue.org/donate.html

update, I'm going to scale the max size back to 600px on widest side for consistency... thanks for your patience as we tweak settings, etc!

Oh, I just resized the one you asked for from 1000 width (my default in B&A's) to 800  :-[ . I understand you want them down to 600 ?

Yes, 800 creates some issues with screen sizing.  Thanks!

Great work on the gallery! It will be really nice to see everyone's work!

I have one question. Is it possible to move my photo or for me to cancel it and upload it again? I made a mistake when I uploaded and now it's in the Biloxi gallery. Sorry for any inconvenience.

no problem; I changed it so users can move their photo to another gallery if they post it in the wrong one by accident.

Great work John, but!!!!!  :-X

Is there any way you can make it so we can cycle through the images in a gallery without having to return to the gallery thumbnail page?

You just can't please some people can you? :funny:

Its nice to have an area where members can showcase their work, as there are so many restorations that have never appeared in the forums, will have to see if I can find one worthy of inclusion.

This is an option that will be activated once we know the gallery is going to work the way we want it to.  Thanks for the feedback.

John, I just uploaded a couple of photos to the gallery, they are both tagged "Picture Not Approved", does this mean there is a problem with them? Or are they awaiting approval? If so perhaps "Picture Pending Approval" may be more appropriate?

Forgive me for being picky, but I am a silly old fart with a low threshold of confusion.

Max

Its OK John, by the time I had posted my whine they were in the gallery. :up2:

Max,

Good suggestion regarding 'pending approval' syntax... I updated it and I agree that makes more sense.

Thanks,

UPDATE:  Thanks to Christine for allowing us to upgrade to the paid version of the gallery software.  You'll notice that there are a few more bells & whistles that really enhance the gallery experience, e.g. previous/next links.  In addition I increased the maximum size of uploadable images back up to 800px on the longest side.  Do you guys want it to be more?  Now the gallery images will appear as 600px when viewed, but if you hover over them and click, they will enlarge like they do in the main forum.  What resolution do you guys want for max viewing?  Let me know.  You can also give each picture a star rating, so have at it!

And as always, let me know if something is not working as it should.

At 600px the enlarging does not show, which makes sense. Would it be possible to replace an uploaded B&A with a larger one to benefit of the zoomfeature and be able to get a closer look at details?
Also for monitor/screen a resolution of 72 is enough, anything more doesn't show anyway (as I always learned).
I think you would like to know max. width and height in pixels. That depends on the size most viewers use. I think there will not be that many people active on the internet using a 800x600 screen anymore. I think 1024 width is quite common these days. But I could be wrong.

Well, I think we'd be asking a lot to make everyone re-upload and re-comment on their pictures, so I'm of the opinion to leave things as is and allow for a somewhat larger upload on a go forward basis.  I'm on a 1680x1050 resolution and the 600px max images are more than viewable for me.   Not only does the gallery allow to upsize the images, it also downsizes them too, so even if we go to the higher size limit, they should be viewable to everyone within their screen.  And this gallery is intended as a general showcase anyway so I think the limited size shouldn't be an issue from a pixel peeping perspective.

If the consensus is to start from scratch, we can certainly do that, but I think we'd be creating more work for ourselves in my opinion.  I'd like it to meet everyone's needs within reason.

What do you think?

Check out the test image of the grasses that I uploaded in the OPR Around the World gallery.  Original size was 3008x2000 (6Mp) and the gallery is resizing it to 600 for basic viewing and then up to 1200px when clicked in the middle, and then full size when you click on the little picture icon that appears in the lower right corner.

Hi John,

Thanks for the changes, makes the site much more user friendly. ;D

I also like the idea of being able to post larger size photos, at low resolution much of the subtle damage that takes so much hard work to repair doesn't show up, and this is a "Skite Site" after all. :funny:

How do larger images impact on your site regarding storage space? I see that as being the limiting factor plus bandwidth usage.

You have made some great changes to this site that enhance the OPR experience, keep up the good work and I'll keep trying to catch up with all the features.

Hi John

Absolutely love the galleries. Seeing others' restorations, many of which weren't posted on the forum, makes me realize what an awesome talented group this is.

And the "where you live" gallery is going to be lots of fun if we get participants from all over the world.  Interestingly, my company is always looking for good shots of Tampa and St. Petersburg, and Black Slate posted a great night shot of the Tampa Skyline.  We'll be in touch with him (her?) for sure!

You make the forum better and better.  Thanks for all your hard work!

Can someone out there please tell me the best way to go about placing the before and after into one document?  Do you re size the photograph before or after you make it into one?  Thanks, and it's great to know that I'll get the help I need right here on the forum.

Mary,

If you are using Photoshop, what I do is open one image and go to Image/Canvas Size resize the canvas to double its present size in one direction, sideways or up and down depending how you want to orient your photos.

Then open the second image and drag it onto the enlarged canvas, once you have it aligned just resize the combined image to the dimensions you want.

Well, it was a long time coming, but I hope it was worth the wait.  It should serve as a showcase for all of the great work that our volunteers do and perhaps inspire a bit as well.

John, I'm with Shujen.  The gallery is a wonderful showcase for our volunteers' impressive efforts, and it's also a means by which we can admire the restorations that weren't posted on the forum before.  I love it and plan to spend a lot of time appreciating what OPR has accomplished in less than 2 years.  You've got a hit with this one!

Cheers,

Uploading a second B&A I noticed an overview of what I had already posted AND a "edit" button. This makes me wonder if I can replace the tiny 600 (when the gallery was more restricted a few days ago) by a bit wider 1000 to get a better view of the changes. I mean only replacing the B&A without changing the title or comments. This might be a usefull feature in case somebody accidently uploads the wrong picture as well.

Can you do me a favor and try to replace one of your pictures?  I'd like to see if it comes up in the 'approve' list or if it just gives you open accesss to update images.

Thanks!

I did. Above the old picture in editing mode it says "Your picture will not appear in the gallery to others until it is approved." And after choosing the bigger B&A it says "Pending bladibla ..." So yes, this is good because it's a treshold to prevent us uploading anything we like when changing an approved photo :funny:

I did replace all my pictures yesterday and they all went to "pending approval" state.   When they came out of approval, they retained the original dates and comments and all.  Great job!

Now all we have to do is find a way to sneak him in to the OPR distributors laboratory so he can work his magic on the spot & grunge machine and convert it to produce pristine images. :funny:

I'm glad everyone is excited about the gallery.  I think it's important to note that while I may have plugged it in, it is really powered by the incredible human spirit that never ceases to amaze me when I think about the time and love that goes into each one of these pictures.  So while there have been some kind words said about me here, at the end of the day it is really all of YOU who are 'whizzes' and 'amazing' at what is clear to me to be the coolest not-for-profit organization that I've ever seen.

Suddenly I see huge stars appearing under the photo's. If we really want or need  rating/ranking can the stars please be smaller. They take away the attention the photo's should have in my opinion. If I had it my way I would take out the rating/ranking completely because I don't think that's what the gallery is about. I think statistics "times viewed" and comments are more than enough. It's a showcase not a competition.

I love the gallery!  I do have to agree with Atlantis on the stars making it more of a competition than a showcase. It tends to give a lopsided view of whose work is the most valued. I would have nothing against voting on the Forum for a favorite occasionally.
