This one had lots of little white dots as well as scratches and the water blistering at right.

I don't think we 'go to far' when we are restoring someones memories, and hopefully bring a smile to their face, especially with the catastrophic losses these families have suffered.  I know we have to move thru the hundreds of photos that need restoration, and what takes one person 30 minutes to fix may take another an hour, but I think we should do the best we are capable of.  I'm looking at this as a learning experience for myself also.  The more photos I restore successfully and professionally, the more I learn and the better I become.  It makes me feel great to see a damaged photo restored to original or better than original condition, and to know that I made it that way.

I agree with happyheart, it gives me a sense of satisfaction to know that I have done something that will make someone very happy. Especially after what they have been through, they will probably appreciate anything that was done.

Thank you for your thoughts. Reading my last message, I realized that I failed to say what I had done:
reconstructed the outside of the hand at right, flipped the background pavement  (fortunately symmetrical) and
used the right earlobe with earring to finish left ear and hair. ...lotsa white dots, used a tiny select circle and copied merged layers and/or used 40% airbrush bursts off-center of spot, hitting a few times to blend. The grain helped.

Jacquelyn-

Just a tip, if you want to post an image you'll need to use the [ IMG ] tags vs. the < img src > tags.

An easy way to do it is just post the normal http:// link to your image  in your post, highlight it, and then click the little icon which will automatically insert those tags for you.

Just an fyi.  Hope it is useful info.
