Hi Everyone,

Thought you would like to read an article about Bluestem Books and owners Pat and Scott Wendt---you know the one that signs in as "PatW." I had to laugh when I read the first line as it sounded more like Pat writing.: "Bluestem Books does not trade in best sellers. In fact, they often make a point of selling worst sellers. They like the challenge."

Margie, thanks for the link, it is a great article!
Would love to have a look at all of those books, sounds like Pat and Scott own a real neat shop.

Reading ranks right up there with OPR and restoring damaged photo as a favorite way to spend my leisure time.  I’d love to have a Pat and Scott’s book store in my neighborhood, it sounds like a wonderful shop.

Margie, what a great article!  How I'd love to have Pat and Scott's book store down the street from me.  We'd do a constant business.  Books are one of my main loves.  If I don't have at least 5 lined up to read, I start getting withdrawal symptoms!   With Pat and Scott being such wonderful people, Don Diego, the adorable king of the bookstore, and the family atmosphere, I think I'd probably want to just move in and never leave.

Aw shucks, guys... OPR Hug

Twenty-eight years ago when we thought we were ready to open a bookstore, we read all the small business guides & even took the Small Business Association's "Should you open your own business" questionnaire.  We flunked it. Even when we lied, we flunked it.  There's no way on paper that a bookstore can possibly succeed. Just being able to buy, price, shelve & sell enough books in a month to pay your rent, let alone your other expenses appears to be an impossible task.

We had a friend who had a bookstore in Minneapolis, so we ran it by him.  His answer was;  "Just open your store & it'll work out.  You'll never get rich, but you'll have a happy life".  So we both quit jobs we hated & opted for poor but happy.

Well he was right on every count.  We've neither starved nor gotten rich and we've been happy for the last 28 years.  Call me crazy, but happy is better than rich.

On the other hand, just a teensy bit rich wouldn't have been such a bad thing...  Roll Eyes
