Hello, I am another person who read the OPR article in Photoshop User magazine. I signed up as soon as I was finished reading the article. Missouri has been hit with an unusual amount of natural disasters this year, and I am excited to be able to use my skills to help families in need.

I have a background in photojournalism and public relations, and have been using Photoshop professionally for about 15 years. I did a lot of restoration work on my family photos when I put together a DVD slide show for my parents' 50th anniversary a few years ago. That was a learning experience, but I am eager to learn more and put my copy of CS5 to the test.

Hi Lindaped,

Welcome to OPR and great to have another NAPP volunteer join our ranks! I think you will love the work and when you hit a snag, post to the forum. Right now the galleries are depleted, but I hope to add a few more today. We also have two of OPR volunteers, Pat and Mike Sluder, doing a mini-copy run in Ohio to shoot some photos of a woman who suffered flood damage. Between the two we should have enough photos to tide us over until we go to Joplin in October.

I bet your parents were thrilled with the slide show. CS5 is great and I still have so much to learn with this upgrade.

Thanks, Margie

The funny thing about restoring photos for the slide show is that after all the years of seeing the photos with weird color casts and bad exposures, when I cleaned them up, my mom hardly recognized some of them! The slide show was a hit at their celebration, though.

I was wondering, do you need volunteers for the Joplin copy run? I'd be glad to help.

Also, I was wondering if anyone is helping the victims from the April tornado that hit St. Louis. Thankfully no one was killed, but a lot of homes were destroyed, some about a block from my mom's house. I'd be glad to help those people, too.

Linda, we would be happy to have you on the Joplin copy run.

No, there is no one helping those hit by the April tornado that hit St. Louis. If you have the chance and want to help there, that would be great. I think by coming on the Joplin run you will be able to see how we do our copy runs.

It's funny that your mom didn't recognized some of the people after you cleaned up the photos.

Linda,

A Big Welcome to OPR.

Your background and skills will be a great asset to OPR.  As you will see there is great camaraderie with everyone on the Forum.

Hope to see you at Joplin.

Hi Linda and welcome to the forum!
Great that you restored family photos for a slide show, your parents must have really enjoyed that.
Reading your report I feel guilty about my own family photos, I really should start digitizing/repairing them but there are so many.  I don't know where to start.
(I'm still in the middle of digitizing cassette tapes but after I installed the cassette deck, software etc. I lost incentive to finish it)

Hello Linda and a warm welcome to the OPR family of volunteers!

Your decision to lend your time and talent to our restoration efforts is greatly appreciated.  The galleries should soon be full of new photos to restore.  We look forward to seeing more of you here in the forum.  You’ll find that the work is very rewarding as well as a little addictive.

If you have an opportunity to help the people of St. Louis that would be wonderful!  I am sure it would be an experience you’d long remember and never regret.

Welcome to OPR, Linda.  I appreciate you jump right in with both hands and feet.  I am confident you are going to like it here.

Your story about the restored photo reminds me of the restoration of the ceiling of Sistine Chapel.  People complained it did not look right after 500 years of soot was removed.

Thanks to everyone for the warm welcome. I would have replied sooner, but I have had some major problems with my satellite internet access that I finally got resolved yesterday. I'm looking forward to helping in Joplin. I spent 11 years producing copy slides and prints for the University of Missouri (amongst other photo duties), and I also have equipment that I can bring if you need it.
