Hi all

I was about to blackout everything on the upper right of this photo when I realized that there's a lot of faint detail that may not be damage.  Possibly lights, green rectangles, maybe even people.  I'm going to post the original and my progress so far and would appreciate any feedback you can give me.  Thanks a lot!

Cheers,

GK

Max, it's great to see you posting again!

Can you see the frame? Is it a doorway, window or framed painting? It doesn't match the window to the left. I might change Image>Mode>Lab and look at the Lightness channel. You might have to lighten the file overall to see ghosting of images. CMYK might also show some detail in the individual layers. You probably already did that, but if not it only takes a minute. Very nice restore! The more I look at it, I think I see trees in the window over the older woman's right shoulder.  On the right side of the image there looks to be 3 vertical and 1 horizontal bars (security bars ??)  IMHO, the green rectangles could be reflections from a flash.  A few ghost like images of trees towards the bottom right.

Thanks, all, for looking.  And thanks for the kind words on the WIP.

I tried every trick I know, and I still can't identify what's in the background.  There are definitely green rectangles, and some of the white and colored blotches look like lights or reflections of lights.  I think this is going to one of those rascals on which it isn't going to pay to try to identify things so much as follow shapes and colors (I had to do that with my last restore, and as I did that, some identifiable objects began to appear - but many things were still just colored blobs that I hoped had some significance.)  In the upper left of the unrestored dark area are swirls of light color that appear in every channel I look at, but I can't for the life of me make out what they are.  So I think I'll go by your observations and my own and not worry too much about identifying every odd shape and color.

Cheers,

GK

P.S.  I just realized that I've officially passed my 5th anniversary with OPR.  I joined on June 26, 2006, right after Dave and Becky founded the organization.  It's been a wonderful time for me. Between the copy run to Biloxi, the upcoming one to Griffin and the great learning experience of working on these tough restorations, I couldn't have asked for a better half a decade as a volunteer!

Could it possibly be glass doors on a free-standing bookcase? Huh?

It looks like glass doors on an entertainment center.  I think the larger white light is either the station identifier (like for a radio) or some type of status indicator showing the device is working.  The other two smaller lights look like on/off idicators.

I think the white to the side of the big black area, is probably the wall behind the entertainment center.  The smaller white thing in front might be a candle and candlestick on a table behind the seating.  OK, scratch that.  After looking more closely, I think that whole area is wall, with something to the side of the entertainment center.
