This is one of the remaining Steger family and very hard to restore.  I tried a few things but I'm completely stuck now.  It probably needs cropping but not sure how much.

Any suggestions for repairs cropping etc. are welcome!

Great colour correction. Cropping? That would be the least of my worries! The person at the back left would worry me enough.

When Hannie has to come to the forum and ask for help then it must me something extremely difficult. Good luck, that's all, just good luck.

Hannie,

I'm thinking this may have to be a non-restore, because of the damage. If the photo were to be cropped it would be to remove the two kids on your left. Let me check with the owner and explain the situation and go from there. Great job on what you could restore!

Hi Hannie,

I got this email back from the owner:

Quote
Please just do the best you can.  The on-site crew did explain that they may not be able to restore this photo.  Thanks and Happy Holidays.

I have replied and asked to make sure about the cropping--will let you know on that. I know it is disappointing to you to have parts of the photo beyond repair, but your efforts and what you can restore is very much appreciated.

Thanks,

Margie

Strewth Hannie

I had looked at it, the boys faces and some of their jackets might be OK. The face of the lass at the  rear is history and the woman's dress is anybody's guess. A portrait crop of the woman and children to the right might work

At this point I am expecting a powerful demonstration of the restoration skill of a DISTRIBUTOR and would like to assure you that no pins have been involved.

Thanks for contacting the owner Margie, the dress can be left dark and blurry then.
Athol, I think that is a good idea, just make portraits and forget about the rest of the photo.  I will start on the left side, the little girl with pigtails should be the easiest to do,
Here's what I have so far: (mark my restoring skills!)

Ta,

Hannie

It would appear that our talented Hannie has been sipping at some spiked eggnog?  Too Funny

Margie

P.S. The owner is OK with a crop, but doubt the art work.

Margie I swear the restore was fine when I uploaded and there were no spikes in the eggnog!
I have my suspicions as to what happened here, found this in Athol's gallery, say no more.....

I am new here so if my question is dumb please forgive me, but I am wondering if there are other photos of the children around this time with less damage that may be used to repair this one?

No, this is not a dumb question at all. Unfortunately there are no other photos from this family that can be used for a reference. We have also been in contact with the owner and she does not have any other photos to use as a reference either. The owner also mentioned that at the time she brought this photo in, the volunteers told her that some of the damaged photos cannot be restored.

hello, I'm new to RPGs and I'm working on the recovery of the next picture, these are early results, the image has much to recover, some time and patience could give better results ...

Hi Ockre,

You have picked one of the most difficult ones to start out on. Hannie (not only a OPR Distributor, but an expert restorer) posted her result and asked the question of how to handle this photo. The first thing you always need to do before starting any restoring is to color correct. If you need some help, click on the OPR Handbook PDF on the upper left hand corner. This photo needs to have the yellow cast corrected first. The background will need to be cleaned up and no clone marks showing. When you see extreme yellow cast, they are usually the result of flood damage or color cast caused by the white balance being off when the photo was photographed by us. Hannie's version will give you an idea of what it should look like.

On the previous post I mentioned that the owner is OK with a crop. This had to be done as the boy and girl on the left hand cannot be brought back. Sometimes you can find details by going into each of the color channels, but not in this case. Also, the owner does not have a reference photo that we could use for this one. You will need to crop and if possible try to keep with the original dimension. Make sure that when you crop, that the resolution stays at 300 dpi.

By removing the girl behind you will need to replace the hand resting on the mother's shoulder with her jacket.

Kudos for attempting this, but should you have a change of heart and want to start on an easier photo; don't hesitate to return this one and take an easier one. We all love challenges, but I don't want your 1st restore to burn you out and be your last!

Ockre, give it a try and post your results. Your English is fine and one thing nice about photos is that they are visual. What is nice about the OPR Handbook is that there are screen shots that show examples. You will get plenty of help from the forum and the people are nice.
