Hi Volunteers

I grabbed this precious youngster because I wanted to try some techniques on him that I was unsure of.  I'm not going to ask any questions, as I'd appreciate your comments without any prompting about what I'm considering as possibly problematic.  He isn't finished, but I think he just needs a few finishing touches.  Please let me know what else you'd do in order to be able to send him home.  Thanks so much.  GK

Well his white shirt doesn't look white.  I sampled the shirt and came up with r 247, g229 & blue 245.  His facial features look a tad flat too.  Perhaps some dodging and burning to bring out facial contours would help.  His hands also have different coloration for some reason.  His left wrist near the sport coat seems to be a different color than his hand.
Its coming along though.  Nice job on getting rid of those nasty vertical white streaks.

glennab you've made such sweet progress on this, in fact i was gonna grab this one for myself but you beat me to it! You made a great job of the ears. My only little nit-picks would be his jacket looks too luminous blue and i'd make it grey-blue. And the background you put in looks a little too much like Photoshop>render>clouds. I'd use a plain background because at the moment it's distracting my attention away from the boys face. But otherwise excellent.

Beautiful repairs Glenna, great job!
If it wasn't for the boy's beautiful blue eyes I would go for monochrome.

Thanks, all, for the feedback. The coloring was a total bear, so I especially appreciate your comments on that.  I think I'll have to do some masking to get rid of the pink cast on his shirt and part of his skin.  It was all pretty blotchy.

K, I hesitated to use the clouds, but the plain gradient looked so - well - plain.  I mustn't have blurred them enough. I think I might lighten the background just a bit more, too.

Most of the streaks on the boy himself were disposed of with the content aware brush. There's a trick to using it, but when it works, it's incredible. I used it more than any other tool on the last two restorations, and I'm sold on it.

Once again, thanks for the help.  There comes a point of diminishing returns, and I was there last night.  You've helped me figure out how to proceed.  I'll probably post him once more since he's been so problematic.

Cheers!

GK

P.S. Hannie, those eyes were what grabbed me in the first place.

GK,

You have done a great job on the repair and I still think that the background needs to be lighter. I'm not sure if the the original was more of a cream color. A minor pic would be that the carpet on the prop his hands rest on would not have that much of a shadow. I think what you see you see in the original is damage. His hair hair I'm not sure whether blond or more of a tow head that would be almost a white and I could see some blue needed there, but not as much as you have showing. I would also try to get the jacket on your left to show a little more color so that it doesn't look so black. Here is what I got and I'm afraid my version makes him look too pink too and the coloring on hand needs more work.

Margie and lurch

Thanks for the further comments.  I especially appreciate it, as the color issues are making me bonkers. The original was so off that there was no conventional way of determining the color correction, so I did that in pieces.  I used numbers to get his skin color (i.e. trying to balance the yellow and magenta) and nothing looked really good. I'll probably post one more iteration, as I trust your assessment more than I do mine at this point.

Eagle eyes to the rescue!

I think I have him this time.  But I'd appreciate fresh eyes, just in case I missed something.  Thanks!

Hi glennab the jacket is fine now! His upper wrist looks a bit pale toward the sleeve, but it's nice to see that nasty blue tint to the hair has gone.

Hi K

Thanks for the feedback.  Since no one else has posted, I'm going to darken the wrist area (I can see where it was too light on the original as well) and send him on to Margie.  I can tell that I'm going to need your younger eyeballs to help me with the colors.  You're all seeing things that get past me.

Your comments (and everyone else's) have been awesome.  I really appreciate it.

Cheers!
