Hi all. As you can see, I'm still here.

I have this portrait since a while and I struggle restoring the boy's pullover. I searched for some similar pictures on the internet, but could not come up with something useful. Now I'm thinking, I should leave it as is and obscure the lower part of the photo. His bow tie needs some reworking too, I save that for last.

What is your opinion? I also would like some feedback on his hair. There was not much left to go on with. Thank you so much for taking the time to check it out.

GP, great to have you back!

I think you have done a great job so far. For some reason I picture the boy as having blond or lighter hair--hard to tell when the photo is not in color. I also think his eye on your right will be lighter. I think your version with the hair looks pretty good since there isn't much to go on. I wondered if perhaps he had a crew cut? As to the sweater, I would borrow enough from your left to help fill out the top of his shoulder and then use a very soft feathered--using the word we are not to say out loud--vignette <gasp>.

Hi Gerlinde,

I thought this photo was going to be a non restore but you have brought it back to life!
I have seen a little photo just like that of my husband, could be his twin brother, same face.  It is because of this photo that I think Margie is right that the boy may have a very blond crew cut.

Good luck with the sweater!

Beautiful job! I think the hair is shorter and not such a modern style. Just over his right ear the hair looks very short, so maybe a crew cut or a buzz.

Thank you Margie and Hannie for your suggestions. The boy is going to get a haircut and a bleaching!
I guess what you are saying is, I need to shorten his hair on the sides?
Hannie, I saw one of your restores in the gallery, >the lady with on eye<. I'm going to try that on this photo.

Thanks again for the help, I will be back.  Smiley

Gerlinde,

Yes, I think maybe shorten on the sides and on the top a crew cut and with a blond look should be about right. I think you have really done a great job on your hair replacement already and it only needs some small tweaks.

Hi Gerlinde

It's great to see you back on the forum!  I wanted to address the sweater, since I'm a knitter.  You could follow the lines of the collar and the seam to go down a little further.  It probably curves gently around his upper chest.  My guess is that the rest of the sweater looks like the portion on his arm to our left.  I have no idea if there would be a way to copy and paste that area and warp it to make anything viable, but at the very least you could lead into your -and I didn't say this - vignette - with a sampling of it curved around in pieces.  I "knitted" a sweater on one of my first little guys, and it didn't look too bad, but it wasn't patterned like this one.

Nice job on what looked like an impossible.

Hugs!

I'm finally back! I hope I considered all your great suggestions. Here is were I am:

I lightened his hair, but maybe not as much as you wanted me too. When you look at the little hair that's left in the original, you will see that it is more a medium blond. Going much lighter than it is now, did just not look right to me. And I made it a bit thinner on both sides. But to tell you the truth, the more I messed around with his hair, the more horrible it looked. I like his current look and that's where I stopped trying.
As you can see, I cropped the photo a little and tried to recreate his pullover as good as possible from the few pieces that were left. If cropping is not acceptable, than I will go back and try a vignette.
Please let me all know what you think, I'm ready to send him home.  Smiley

Great job Gerlinde, the sweater looks good!  I agree on the hair, you have to keep some of the dark in there otherwise it will look washed out and faded.  Perhaps you could add a few lighter streaks on the upper sides like I tried to do in my example?

Gerlinde, any time you want to come help me knit blankets for Project Linus, let me know.  You did a fine job of creating the remainder of the sweater with so little to work with.  Hannie, I love what that little bit of highlight did to his hair.

I'd never have guessed that this little boy would have been restorable. Amazing job.

Hugs!

I used to knit as a kid a lot, but now I don't have the patience anymore. It's easier with the graphic pen, then with needles.  Too Funny

Thank YOU Hannie, your little touch of highlights really make this portrait come back to life.

I will try to replicate that (thanks for the instructions) and than send him home.

Welcome to the forum Crazyguy!

Before you spend too much time working this restore I probably should warn you that this photo already has been printed and sent home!

If for practice purposes this is a great project!
This is a difficult restore and your version looks very good.
The top of his head still needs some attention and anything you can come up with for the sweater that somewhat matches the original will do.
