Hi volunteers

I cleaned up the little girl as best I could, and I think the color is okay (please advise if it's not!).  Problem is the background.  There are areas of heavy grain as if there might be objects in the background, yet nothing is discernible.  I don't know whether to leave the background as is - with the cleanup so far, or to cover the black bkgd. with the grain.  On the right of center there are brighter specs that could be something, but I have no idea what it is.

Any suggestions would be welcome!  Thanks so much.

Hi Glenna, my friend. 

Here are my 2cts. just blur the background. I don't think there is anything of importance. Nice cleanup on the girl. You could maybe soften the contrast between her lower half of the face and the part in the shadow. Her chin looks a bit pale to me.

GK - I'm with Gerlinde on the background. And if I were retouching her face I'd do something about the too light chin, but it's that way in the original. Where does restoration leave off and retouching begin? That's a long way around saying that decision is up to you. Skin tones look too cool to me.

Thanks, ladies, for your input. I'll revisit the color of her chin and neck.  I probably overcompensated, as her skin was all more blue than any other color.  I tried to get a balance using the info pallette, and the numbers worked, but I can see that it looks odd, even though it's that way in the original.  Which begs lurch's very valid question of restoration vs. retouching.

Gerlinde, I think blurring the background is the best way to go, too.  It's really odd that there are so many different shades of grainy purplish-black (or is it blackish-purple?).  And no shapes at all except for the blue next to the girl (I think it's a backpack, but I'm not going to play guessing games with that.  Will just be sure it's as clean as possible).
