I just wanted to say hello as a newbie.  I'm still trying to work out the kinks on downloading my first picture (when I click on "Download" it tells me "Download Unavailable", even though the picture is in my gallery.)

Anyway, I plan to start on the easy end and work my way up.  I've done a good bit of restoration and compositing work, but I will need to "feel" my way through this.

For example, the picture I have selected is an old black and white image, but it has a kind of blue-green color cast.  As I restore it, how close to a true grayscale black and white do I take it?  Or do I keep the color, make it sepia, or what?

I'm looking forward to being able to work on these photos.

Hi David,

A warm welcome to the forum from Amsterdam!
you should be able to download from your gallery now, if you are still having problems let me know.
The photo you picked is best worked on in B/W (in a Channel Mixer adjustment layer you can check the monochrome box)

Hope this helps,

Hannie

Welcome to OPR from Kansas, David. The forum is a great place to meet people and exchange ideas. After we come back from Nashville, there will be more photos to choose from. We try to have several families photos in the gallery and then when those are done, we upload more. Have fun with your first restore and post to the forum if you need help or want your photo critiqued.

Hi David

Welcome from another Floridian! You must have whipped through your first restoration to have it completed so quickly.  Awesome!  I hope you'll post it either on the forum or in the gallery.

It's great to have another newbie, especially one who's already experienced.  I hope you find your OPR tenure as rewarding as I have, and I'm starting into my 5th year.  You won't find a more wonderful or helpful group of people anywhere, and no matter the point at which you are in your learning curve, you'll ramp up your knowledge quickly by slogging through our monsters and interacting with our volunteers.

I'm so glad you've joined us!

Glenna,

Thanks for the welcome!  My first photo didn't take long, but I purposely picked an easy one!  Some of the photos in the gallery are VERY intimidating!

I'll see about posting the before and after here.  I assume that you scale them down before doing that ...

Okay, so here is the before and after.  Like I said, it was a pretty easy one.

Hannie,

I just uploaded my next project, (CainS_20_02_4x3).  It was a pretty easy one, except for the left hand!

Let me know what you think.  Below, I have attached a before and after for review.
