Hello I am Andy Mcdowell.  I have just joined and wanted to introduce myself.

I have been amazed at what you people can do to seriously damaged photographs.  I am looking forward to my first restoration (Just as soon as I find something simple enough for my limited skills to handle  Azn ) I think the whole concept of this site is amazing and I am chuffed to be a part of it.

Oh yeah, I am 30 and from Hebburn in the North East of England.  When not busy photoshopping I am in the Merchant navy.

Hi Andy

Welcome from frozen Florida!  I'm so glad you've joined us.

Sometimes I'm amazed at what we're able to do with these mucked up images, too.  Most of us started out unsure of our skills and ability to tackle the tough ones (these are, after all, the worst of the worst), but this is a wonderful group of people who help and cheer each other on as we grapple with strange and seemingly impossible damage. We have tutorials throughout the forum, and if you have a question or an unusual challenge, be sure to post it and someone will jump in and give you their observations and suggestions.

It's great to have another Brit in the crowd.  I'll look for you on the forum.

Cheers!

Welcome to OPR Andy. I echo Glenna's comments. While I was reading them it occurred to me that we do for free what most professional restores would not touch because of the expense of their time.

I understand your desire to find some easy ones. They will be along in time as we have been told. Then watch out for what looks easy as it has a way of biting back. I had first hand experience with that on my first restore. It looked easier than it turned out to be, but with the help of the eagle eyes on the forum we managed to get it right.

While you are waiting you might want to pick up a copy of Katrin Eismann's book Photoshop Restoration & Retouching, Third Edition. She does an excellent job of explaining along with images you can download to practice with. I have learned quite a few things from the book. As you find helpful tips in the forum, you may want to bookmark them for later use. I even created a Word document with mentioned web sites to go back to later.

Glenna, finally we both have something in common. We are cold!!! According to the evening news you should be in the 80's (26 C) towards the end of the week. We are hoping for the high 30's (3 C)or low 40's (5 C) here in southwest Ohio. Heat wave.

Hi Andy, welcome from Kansas! We are happy you have joined and don't give up on finding some easier photos in the gallery. There are plenty more photos waiting to be released and there are easy ones--you just have to pay ($$$$$) to get them, but they are there.  Wink OK, you only have to wait till we get most of a family's photos out for restoring, before releasing the next family's photos. Keep checking the galleries as more will be coming.

Thanks for the welcome.

Snow is not too bad here at the moment, it has been thawing out nicely.

JOHNBOY, thanks for that book recommendation, I have just ordered it, should have it in a few days.

Quick question for anybody.  My job takes me out of the country, and away from internet access for roughly six weeks at a time.  Would it be acceptable to take away an image or two, and work on them while away or is that too long of a turn around?

Cheers

Hi Andy,

A warm welcome to the forum, from cold Amsterdam!

To answer your question, it depends a little on which photos you take.  There may be a couple of photos that we need to do faster than others.  The best thing is to ask the distributor of the gallery you picked from.

It can always happen that a photo turns out to be more of a challenge than you'd anticipated when you first picked it.  (of course if you pick from my gallery, you would never have that problem  Halo)

If you need more time to finish a restore you can email your distributor, we really appreciate to know that you are still working on a certain restore and did not run away screaming.

Great mate cheers for the info.  I still have a few weeks until I am off to sea again so I will see how I do on the first few photos.

Andy,

I was really biting my tongue on my post last night but Hannie opened the flood gates.

If you believe that then as we say across the pond, "I have a bridge to sell you." Don't be surprised to find animal tracks on any of the photos from her gallery. We also accuse the other distributors of running the photos through a muck machine before we get them because they never look that bad in the gallery. Now that I have cast my own fate, I'll have to pick from another gallery. Boy, the threats Hannie gave me the last time.  Grin

Andy as you can tell it is not all work on the forum.

In defense of the reputation of Hannie, she won the award of the best salesmanship 2009.

I don't know, Shujen.  Would you really call "bait & switch" salesmanship?  Let's compromise and call it sales "weaselmanship." (weaselwomanship???)

Andy, always bear in mind that under that sweet face and ever so much sweeter offer of "easy" restorations from her gallery, Hannie the Hun will lull you with promises and then send you images that have been put through her demonic shredder and then pasted back together.  That's after they've been dragged through giraffe and elephant poo. (I wuv U Hannie!)

JB, I'm glad you gave Andy the heads up on Katrin's book.  She's awesome!  In fact, it's time for me to give it another read, I think.

It is predicted to warm up to the high 70s later in the week, but I haven't heard whether it's supposed to last.  I hope so. We're all total wusses when it comes to cold.  My fingers and toes feel as if they're going to fall off.  This is an all-time record cold spell for Florida.  It bites!  (I wuv U 2, JB, but the cold is not something I want to have in common with you, if you don't mind too terribly!)

Hugs all!
