Stupid question, how do I copy an alpha channel to an empty layer?

Since my last post on the yellow image I have tried to copy and past an alpha channel into a empty layer. I spent a long time looking for the answer on Google, but I can not find anything that works. So....how do I copy and paste and alpha channel into an empty layer? I have CS4 & just upgraded from 5.0....
