I just found this site and decided to join. I love restoring photographs and have been doing it for a few years. I hope to get started restoring photos here soon, as soon as I figure out the whole process. I've got my PhotoShelter account set up but now I don't know what to do. Any tips from people who've been here awhile would be great, of course I haven't read any of the FAQ threads yet so I'm sure I'll find answers there.

Anyways just wanted to introduce myself and ask a quick question; Can we use photographs we restore for this site in personal portfolios?

Welcome to OPR from Ohio. This group will really test your restoration skills. Probably the best thing to do is download the Official OPR Handbook PDF. It will give  you the details on how to get started along with the basic ins and outs. You will find the link at the top left when you are logged in. However don't panic about what is left in the galleries. Those ladies will do anything to hook you in on what is left.   Evil  If you click on the recent post "Impressive Numbers" at the left you will get a picture of what is currently happening.

Once you do get to doing restorations please feel free to share your progress. We depend on each other to find those things we miss, and pointers on how the restoration can be better. We look forward to seeing you on the forum.

Thanks Johnboy! Yeah I've downloaded the Handbook and I've also had a look at the galleries and the "Impressive Numbers" thread. Those are some tough images for sure! I chose two of the easiest looking ones (although none of them look very easy) to try. I'm unemployed right now so I have plenty of time to dump into a tough restoration while I wait for all of my job applications to be disregarded. *sigh*

Welcome to OPR from another Kansan! You will be getting your instruction letter shortly and also a PDF that show how to select photos. The OPR Handbook is current, but PhotoShelter has made a few changes to the selection process. We are happy that you are here and if you have any questions, the forum is a great place to meet others and get help.

Whoo go Kansas! I got the email, thanks for the information. I noticed in the email it said students should take a photo from the student gallery. Well I'm not a student but if you need me to do one of these first (I'm assuming this is why I haven't received an invitation to download the difficult restorations I picked?) I can do that. What do I do with restorations from the student gallery? Do I need to upload the restored version back to PhotoShelter or since it's already been restored by someone else do I just post my version here? And where would I post it? Sorry I've got so many questions, I could probably figure this all out by myself but direct answers are usually better (and faster).

Hi, looks like I'm not the only one keeping late hours!  Grin All of the photos in the Student Gallery have already been worked and sent home. This gallery was started, because we were getting classrooms with students wanting to help and also part of their assignment was to do a restoration. Since we had nothing but difficult photos, we started the Student Gallery to help get students started. We have kept the gallery for students only, but don't worry more photos will be coming soon.

I checked my gallery and did not see your comment on a photo. If you picked one from Hannie's gallery, wait till morning for her to respond. She is in the Netherlands and Tess is in Australia, so time difference may be the problem. Let us know which gallery you have left a comment on.

I will be signing off, but will check back in the morning.

Yeah the photos weren't from your gallery, they were from Hannie's. I'll wait 'til the morning then, and yeah I always keep late hours. Thanks for the patience and quick response!
