I started wondering why I had not heard from Glenna or GK as she now prefers to be called. I know Max would say not to wake the GK, but curiosity got the better of me. So I sent an email to see what she was up to, turns out GK needs some get well cheer sent her way.

Have you ever heard of going to the hospital and having things made worse? Monday she was having chest pains due to what she attributed to acid reflux. Complaining of chest pains got her a trip to the ER and put in the cardiac unit, hooked up to electrodes, and having a nitroglycerine patch. The side effect for GK was a severe headache and morphine to counteract the meds. Turns out there was nothing wrong with her heart as she tried to tell them and after discharging her from the hospital the doctor told her there was nothing wrong with her heart! In a moment of frustration, she bit the doctor! OK, I embellished that one, but GK was not a happy camper!

The bad news is that today she found out that she will have to have surgery later to remedy a sinus infection, which will mean missing a week of work. She will also be seeing a neurologist to see if they can find why she keeps falling down and has terrible headaches.

When GK ended with: “Right now I’m so down I’m as close to mute as I’ve ever been (and you know that’s saying something!). How about some get well wishes coming to the mute GK!

Oh my. Glenna I'm sending you back one of those guardian angels. OPR Hug You need them more than me at the moment. I hope the sinus op goes well and they find out what else is wrong. It could very well be the sinus problem creating the other symptoms as well.

Glenna,

Sorry to hear about all your medical problems. Remember all those good wishes we sent for Lon? Maybe he can share some with you. The odd thing is that in the last couple of weeks I had been wondering how the old boy was doing, and now it's you. You two just have to stop doing this stuff.  Smiley In the mean time you are in my prayers that surgery and recovery go well for you.

Hi, my beloved OPR-sters

Thanks so much for the concern you've sent my way.

Tess, I love the little cat.  I can say without hesitation that we have the "barf" portion of our situation TOTALLY COVERED.  I'd love to scrape up a few days' worth and personally deliver it to several members of the medical profession!

Kiska, that adorable little pup so made me laugh, as did the message under it.  He's going to be printed out and posted on my bulletin board at work!

Candy, we know where the needle is!  Good thing I'm not afraid of being stuck.  My arms look as if they've been through a war, and the needle up the nose routine – holy smoke!

Hannie, Dan, JB, MJ and Vicki: thanks for all your wonderful words.  You've made me feel cared for, and at this point that's about all anyone can do on my behalf.

JB, interesting that you've been wondering how Iron Man is doing.  He was laid off Friday after 12 years at the engineering company at which he worked, and the dastardly deed was done when the people who would have raised a stink about it were on vacation.  That's going to take a while to digest!  He's already making plans to deal with the situation, so we'll do okay.  Fortunately he has many contacts and resources to find other work.  The scary thing is that he's over 60, and with the economy as it is, who knows whether anyone will take a chance on someone that close to retirement age.

I'm just waiting out the next week until I have the surgery on my infected sinuses.  I can't take any more antibiotics, so basically the infection will be untreated for more than a week. Fortunately I have a wonderful, canny family doctor who sent me to a specialist whom I trust.  That helps.

Everyone at work has been wonderful.  We attended my company president's 50th birthday party for a short while last night, and I was shown how much my associates both in and outside the office care. I got squeezed like an accordian every time I turned around.  Felt good!  I came home with my spirits lifted.

So… here's where things are:  I'll work next week (I don't feel sick – just extremely tired), then the 20th I'll have surgery to drain the debris out of my sinus.  I've been assured by several people that I'll feel 900% better once I get through that.  I'll be out of work for a week (great! no income!  Good thing I stocked up on Meow Mix for our hurricane kit! We may be joining the kitties as they scarf their kibble!)

Once I recover from that if I'm still falling down there'll be a trip to a neurologist.

Meantime, I'm reading books by our presidential and VP candidates, sleeping and generally being pretty useless.  The cats are lonely.  They sit at the bedroom door and take turns talking to me.  It's incredibly dear.  When I get up and sit in my chair and a half, I have 5 or 6 of them with me.

One thing I can assure you is that we won't be down for long.  Both of us are very resilient, we still laugh a lot and take joy in whatever we can and know that we're strong enough to weather most anything together.  The last 6 months have definitely tested that (and as my sister says, "We didn't sign up for this course!"), and we're still here holding on to each other and making the most we can of what we do have (which in the overall scheme of things is a LOT!).

Knowing that you care means more to me than I can express.  Having the OPR crew on my side has to give me more clout with the powers that be than I'd normally have.  I don't know how much I'll be posting, but I check the forum regularly and shall continue to do so.

Thank you again for your moral support.  I truly love all of you!

Hi Glenna,
A little belated, but I'm sorry to hear of your problems, sounds like you have been having a rough time in many ways, it is amazing how these things seem to come in groups, may be connected to that old saying "Misery loves company".

It is not good about Lon, however it is so typical, when times get tough the first thing to be cut are the jobs of the workers, not the executive salaries, its amazing how all these gigantic Corporations and Banks can be going to the wall but the CEO's manage to jump clear with their millions.

I certainly hope he can find something else, though as you said you will make it through - one of the advantages of being old - had plenty of practise with hard times!

Anyway Glenna, remain positive and look after yourself. ( a little better than you have been, would help).

GK, just when you think things can't get worse, Lon gets laid off. I think once you have your surgery, you will start feeling a lot better. My sister had it done and it helped as well as getting away from the work environment that was irritating her sinuses.

Having worked in aerospace most of my life, I've seen how large companies operate. I know that the economy is hurting right now and lay offs are inevitable. Unfortunately, I have watched how older employees with the most years with the company are often the first out. Some may have been dead wood, but most were cut because of their higher pay. One company I worked at laid off a man that had less than a year before retirement. The good news is that a law firm helped the company see the error of their ways. After experiencing another lay off, I decided why not be a contractor and make more money and escape company politics. I became what is known as a "job shopper" and spent 5 years going from one aerospace company to another. Usually I would work for a year and when that work was finished, it was on to the next. I would highly recommend that Lon look into a subscription to Contract Job Hunter. Here is their web address: http://www.cjhunter.com/  This is a wonderful place to get some help in finding contract engineering jobs. By getting a subscription; you not only get a weekly publication, but you also get some other great benefits. Tell Lon that the great thing about contracting is that job experience and the ability to get things done is what counts, not his age.

Hang in there!  OPR Hug
